Forums - Nintendo - IGN gives Wii Fit a 8.0 WOW WHAT HAPPENED to core reviewers these days?

Hmm.. I had a little problem with vg for a moment there , but anyways I'm fine with the score. I just wish more reviewers could see how wii fit itself is expanding gaming. There's nothing like this out on the market , unless you want to count DDR , which is hardly the same and gets more respect from critics. At least they could respect the potential the balance board brings and see peoples excitement about this game. At least , I know there will be millions other people out there who can see eye to eye with me on this.

But if you want to talk about messed up reviews IGN , just gave Boom Blox a 8.1 and SingStar a 8.5. Now , that's just plain wrong. Boom Box is 1 of the most addictive and unique puzzle games I've ever played and SingStar is the same as it ever was. Sorry to get a little off topic , but wow.

I think they reviewed it like any game. If they had dropped standards to review it they would have been more lenient on areas such as graphics and presentation. Instead they weren't. Maybe the gameplay does work and it has a lot of replay value, which by the way, is the heart of any game.

Have they changed of heart?

http://wii.ign.com/articles/875/875214p2.html

7.0 Presentation
A robust list of exercises and mini-games, easy to navigate menus, and on-screen instructors. Clings to misleading BMI and lacks bells and whistles where graphics and audio are concerned.
5.0 Graphics
Simple. Basic. Will not seem daunting to newcomers. There's polish to the graphics, but they also border on the generic side.
6.0 Sound
Crisp, clean voice commands from on-screen instructors and the music is fitting. The instructions, though, are repeated too often.
8.0 Gameplay
Great fun and a great workout at the same time. Not at all gimmicky. You will feel the burn and wake up sore the next morning.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
More than 40 different challenges and, like any exercise program, you will keep coming back, again and again.

No change of heart, but I know you were sarcastic.

These people, and IGN isn't the worst of them, are just tired of eating crow, that's what.

The little of the review I read shows that they dare say what Nintendo should have done better. That's just so that they can remove points though. Because they clearly don't have a clue as to what qualify as good or not for these kind of games, and sure enough they couldn't lecture Nintendo on it.

This isn't traditional software, so they can review it, but sure enough can't rate it. Not with a hardcore player's mind at least. They need fresh reviewers to review these games correctly.

One can also see that they don't understand it one bit, when they talk about BMI use being a mistake. This to me, is like the Mass Effect incident, and should be treated like that. But no, they say Nintendo made a mistake! These guys actually forgot on a whim that this is a GAME! It's not a simulation, it's not there to be accurate. All the core gamers make the same mistake, they put fault on Nintendo games or hardware for not being a perfect representation of reality (wiimote not 1:1, poor physics, BMI not appropriate, ...).

That's because their game are so polished, that they mistake them for a simulation. How then could they review it?

No, I'm certain this is just not to eat more crows. I just have to look at Wii Sports. Wii Sports was a revolution, and what did it get? Remember that IMO, Wii Sports is a revolution, not a crap shovelware like they thought it to be. A game that is a revolution (selling the console again and again to millions of users) should have at least got a 9.5, up to 10. But it got 7.5...

Wii Fit get slapped for BMI not being accurate, and then they cite the usual suspects: people that already do sports.

Except that this game was not targeted at these "hardcore" fit people. This is targeted at the average people, and if even hardcore go to it, those that know perfectly well that BMI is not correct will just dismiss it. This is a plus, not a minus. There are lots of other likely nonsenses, like they say unlocking will be daunting to newcomers unfamiliar with unlockables. Hello? These people won't even know there are unlockables! They will be genuinely surprised to discover their efforts paid off when they unlock something. It spans several days, and that's very good. These reviewers sound like they never played a Brain Training game, or like it was daunting for newcomers to unlock things in them. Wrong! That's a plus, not a minus.

Wii Sports got a 7 for presentation,  Wii Fit gets a 7 too. There, these people don't get it, at all! They even include graphics and audio in it. This is nonsense, as there are rates for these already, and it's not even part of their description of what presentation rates. These games should have gotten a 10 for presentation, both of them.

They have an immediate appeal to everyone except graphic whores, the menus are simple to navigate, etc. A 7 for both of these games is nonsense already.

Now graphics. More nonsense: Wii Sports got a 4, Wii Fit gets a 5. This is pure BS. This tells us that this is not graphics that is rated here. No, that's "graphics production value", or "graphics similarity with reality", but not graphics in themselves. Wii Sports and Wii Fit use a specific kind of graphics, which are bordering on perfect in their genres. Minimalist graphics are in no way bad graphics. And they're a perfect fit for these two games. Bald space marines in 1080p wouldn't fit at all on these games. There are all kind of study on usability and graphics, and these graphics are tailored to not push people away from the game. Guess what, it works perfectly well, like Mii have shown. The two games should have gotten at least 8 in graphics, as they were nearly perfect fit for the games. Of what they rate is not graphics, but what I cited before.

Sound: the BS goes on. Why does the games get 6 or 7? The music and voice effects are not annoying in both games
! At least, I can understand the scores here, as Wii Sports is not localized in non-english countries, but Wii Fit is, so I don't understand. There's 2 points lacking for Wii Fit. Wii Sports could give instructions, so it deserves the 6.

Gameplay: 8. This is pure BS and nonsense. Both games should get a 10 in gameplay. This is where hardcores can't rate the game correctly.

Lasting appeal: this is where hardcores can't rate correctly too. How come Wii Fit get a 9 and Wii Sports got 7? This is nonsense, there are people still playing Wii Sports as we speak, that got it near launch.

I actually thought they'd give it a higher score because they had been gushing over the game in previous articles and podcasts. I was expecting maybe an 8.5.

An 8.0 sounds about right to me. From what I read in another review, it's a solid first effort but a sequel will easily blow this one out of the water.

Btw, IGN UK gave it an 8.0 also in April.

Edit: It seems to be right in line with Metacritic's aggregate score.

yushire are you saying the 8.0 is to high or to low? You've compared the scores to Mario and Sonic and Carnival games and Wiifit's review score is higher than both of these.

What im saying is if Wii Fit have an 8.0 other casual games should deserve a better score score like Mario and Sonic and Carnival games, just read this page to see what I mean:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/833/833014p1.html

and yeah, for game such as Wii Fit, the score was too low.

Games are supposed to be fun, not workouts. I give it a 5 based on its concept.

Wii Fit could have been rated 2.0 and still change the face of gaming.

Tell that to DDR, which is not only fun, but a great workout. I have not played Wii Fit, but I'm sure that it's along the same line.

And why can't they be both?
