The final fantasy series has ALWAYS repeat ALWAYS sold fantastically in Japan. Its not unreasonable to suggest FF13 will be a huge seller and boost the console. Theres no way this would take it past the Wii though, but then, that shouldnt be Sonys aim anymore

The PS3 is specced ahead for its time (of course this is reflected on price/hardware losses). The PS3 could well outlast the PS2's lifecycle for many years, the PS2 will probably sell about 140 million, IMO Sony should aim to better this.

But of course everything in due time, if the PS3 sold twice as many units as it did and the PS2 would have been discontinued IMO Sony would have been in serious financial problems. Once the hardware is cost reduced enough, bring on the mass market sales.

Really, so when Sony decided to stick in a modified 7800GTX into the PS3, they were planning for it to last 10 years even if in 10 years, we'll be getting GPUs that could very well be 10 times stronger?

So what? It's not like the PS2 or Wii is cutting edge technology nowadays or are they? The 8-core Cell + RSX + Blu-Ray drive + harddrive is a wonderfully powerful combination like how it's implemented in the PS3. There are going to be other more powerful systems during the PS3's lifecycle, but no specific configuration will come close in terms of install base as the PS3 will have during this lifecycle and probably will not be able to compete with regard to pricing (of interest to games developers).

Consoles are all about optimisation and learning to use the available technology as smart as possible, just look at God of War 2 for the PS2. I was a PC gamer and I can't remember a game this polished despite the PC's mcuh better specifications than the PS2.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Easy one, nop... the game could be good, great or awesome, but one game is not going to save the PS3...

I actually came into the thread to say, PS3 doesn't need to be revived or saved; it's handily beating 360 nowadays and the trend looks very likely to continue.  PS3 costs will keep coming down, and profits will rise.  Attach rate is really starting to majorly improve.  Christmas 08 will be huge for Blu-Ray.

But, oh..Japan.  Yeah, sales will really pick up monumentally surrounding MGS4 and FFXIII (highest percent hardware sales increase for any home console ever surrounding the launch of exclusive games for that console), and also when a slim model is introduced, the price drops, and BC is reintroduced.  The games and slim design being the most important.

Based on the boost provided by FFVII Crisis Core + Slim Remake of the PSP, I would say a slim PS3 + FFXIII next October could push the system past the Wii. As long as they start showing some stuff that is more Japan centric to back up GT5 and FFXIII I think PS3 will be fine.

Do you realise this thread is about Japan and how bad is the PS3 loosing the market against the Wii??? andhow really needs awesome boost and the OP thinks about FF as the source of that boost to come  back to the game???

 Even your post prove this:

Yes, exactly and do you know why the PS2 survived all this time and is still surviving? Not because of its spec, but because of its massive popularity, something the PS3 is currently deficient in. Secondly, you're using the PS3's price as a reason to why game developers might be attracted to it? The Wii is always going to compete with the PS3 and it's always to be cheaper than the PS3 in price and development. When a generation moves forward, so will developers and the gap between next generation consoles will probably prevent devs from making a PS3 version. As you can see, the Wii is facing a similar problem from third parties and would have probably died already if not for that controller. The PS3 has no such advantage, especially given its current performance. You see any games currently being made for the original Xbox?

You're saying that the PS3 is specced ahead of its time yet now you've admitted it will become severely obsolete by the time Nintendo and MS releases their next console.

Oh yes, Far Cry came out in 2004 for the PC 2-3 years before the release of God of War 2 so I really don't know what you're talking about, not remembering any PC game that doesn't look as good.

Do you realize that the OP didn't mention the Wii? As for the rest of it, yeah, I realize and my post was responsive to it. I said that PS3 will get awesome boosts from several things, and I listed them. Thanks for bolding some of them, but Monster Hunter was at least as big for PSP in Japan as the slimmer model was (so it's mostly about the games).

And if my post proves it (except the Wii reference, which you are wrong about), why do you ask if I realize what the thread is about, only to show me that Ive discussed that very thing in my post?

I know it won't because one game can never turn around an entire nation.

If it sold 2 million PS3's, it still wouldn't turn around anything, if by "turn around" you mean beat the Wii.

If by turn around, you mean keep from selling sub-10k weeks in Japan for the rest of its lifecycle, I also doubt it.

I asking if it will change the sub 10k a week to a much higher number.

I view the Wii and PS3 as two very distinct platforms, I don't see them directly competing for the long run.

If 3rd parties would suddenly put the bulk of their efforts behind the Wii it could become a problem. But currently however it's mainly just Nintendo and they never supported the Playstation brand well.

No, because low sales mean bad for business.  It's not a comparative thing.  You went into console fanboy mode and read the Wii into the OP when it just seemed to be about higher/lower sales.
