Its not unreasonable to suggest FF13 will be a huge seller and boost the console. Theres no way this would take it past the Wii though, but then, that shouldnt be Sonys aim anymore |
The PS3 is specced ahead for its time (of course this is reflected on price/hardware losses). The PS3 could well outlast the PS2's lifecycle for many years, the PS2 will probably sell about 140 million, IMO Sony should aim to better this. But of course everything in due time, if the PS3 sold twice as many units as it did and the PS2 would have been discontinued IMO Sony would have been in serious financial problems. Once the hardware is cost reduced enough, bring on the mass market sales. |
Really, so when Sony decided to stick in a modified 7800GTX into the PS3, they were planning for it to last 10 years even if in 10 years, we'll be getting GPUs that could very well be 10 times stronger? |
So what? It's not like the PS2 or Wii is cutting edge technology nowadays or are they? The 8-core Cell + RSX + Blu-Ray drive + harddrive is a wonderfully powerful combination like how it's implemented in the PS3. There are going to be other more powerful systems during the PS3's lifecycle, but no specific configuration will come close in terms of install base as the PS3 will have and probably will not be able to compete with regard to pricing (of interest to games developers) Consoles are all about optimisation and learning to use the available technology as smart as possible, just look at God of War 2 for the PS2. I was a PC gamer and I can't remember a game this polished despite the PC's mcuh better specifications than the PS2. |
Yes, exactly and do you know why the PS2 survived all this time and is still surviving? Not because of its spec, but because of its massive popularity, something the PS3 is currently deficient in. Secondly, you're using the PS3's price as a reason to why game developers might be attracted to it? The Wii is always going to compete with the PS3 and it's always to be cheaper than the PS3 in price and development. When a generation moves forward, so will developers and the gap between next generation consoles will probably prevent devs from making a PS3 version. As you can see, the Wii is facing a similar problem from third parties and would have probably died already if not for that controller. The PS3 has no such advantage, especially given its current performance. You see any games currently being made for the original Xbox?
You're saying that the PS3 is specced ahead of its time yet now you've admitted it will become severely obsolete by the time Nintendo and MS releases their next console.
Oh yes, Far Cry came out in 2004 for the PC 2-3 years before the release of God of War 2 so I really don't know what you're talking about, not remembering any PC game that doesn't look as good.
