Really, so when Sony decided to stick in a modified 7800GTX into the PS3, they were planning for it to last 10 years even if in 10 years, we'll be getting GPUs that could very well be 10 times stronger? |
So what? It's not like the PS2 or Wii is cutting edge technology nowadays or are they? The 8-core Cell + RSX + Blu-Ray drive + harddrive is a wonderfully powerful combination like how it's implemented in the PS3. There are going to be other more powerful systems during the PS3's lifecycle, but no specific configuration will come close in terms of install base as the PS3 will have during this lifecycle and probably will not be able to compete with regard to pricing (of interest to games developers).
Consoles are all about optimisation and learning to use the available technology as smart as possible, just look at God of War 2 for the PS2. I was a PC gamer and I can't remember a game this polished despite the PC's mcuh better specifications than the PS2.
