Hmmm.. it's almost as if there was an increase in Wii sales going on. Too bad GTA4 just killed it. ;__;
A number of factors affected the sales for the wii,ssmbb,mkwii,demand in the US because of stockpiling in Japan/europe.The wii sales wont be this high after wiifit hits America then we will see how things pan out in the summer months when the PS3's biggest exclusive this year hits.
SSMBB and MKWII didnt sell Wii's Nintendo simply releasing more consoles is what sold the Wii. Just like WiiFit in May. If Nintendo wants to seel 1 million Wii's in May they dont need WiiFit. They need 1 million consoles available.
Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.
Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.
1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.

Actually I think they stockpiled in April to deliberatly release a huge amount of Wii's right before GTAIV release. I think it was a brilliant stategy. Sucked up a lot of disposable income. People saying to themselves "I am getting a Wii now while I can. GTAIV and a 360/PS3 can wait. They will be easy to find a month or two from now."
I still think Mario Kart Wii would still have sold 1 million copies in April even if Nintendo had only shipped 200,000 Wii's.
