A retired war hero, code named SolidSnake, is called back into action to stop a bunch of super terrorist led by his long lost brother "liquid Snake" in Alaska (shadow mosses) from using a mobile nuclear tank called Metal Gear. Snake goes into the sneaking mission and defeats the leaders of the terrorist army one by one (along with Metal Gear) with the help of a rookie female soldier, cyborg ninja and scientist he met during his mission. Several years after Shadow Mosses Snake comes back to infiltrate a tanker in NewYork but the tanker explodes and Snake is presumed dead. Several years after the tanker incident, a new soldier called "Raiden" is sent into a mission located on a giant oil cleanup facility called "big shell" to infiltrate and destroy a newer Metal Gear (that can swim). Raiden defeats the terrorists as well as the new metal gear with the help of a cyborg ninja, scientist and Snake. Raiden then joins Snake on a war to take down Liquid Snake/Ocelot and both disappears from the public. MGS3 is about Solid Snake's dad, Big Boss and how he became bigboss by going into Russia to stop a bunch of super soldiers from launching a nuclear warhead similar to Metal Gear. Bigboss kills off his old mentor then realizes that his life is nothing without war and fighting, he so recruits a bunch of soldiers, builds a space station and becomes a terrorist himself.

That's Metal Gear Solid in a nutshell. The events after MetalGearSolid 3 and before MetalGearSolid1 is part of the original Metal Gear series.
