Sony said they'd be profitable this year. What's the deal?
Like I've said.
I believe Sony was happy with their numbers at this price. When people asked for a price cut (from both companies) I said it wouldn't make much sense on either part.
I do believe though if MS' price cut started to hurt Ps3 sales they would of reacted (and giving them a better advantage than 360)
And right now I think they will cut costs but ride out the year at this price with making profit on HW.

"On its earnings call, Sony management indicated the company is now more focused on achieving profitability in the PlayStation segment... Importantly, management comments also suggest that a price cut is less likely on the PS3 this year, at least in the near term."
Interesting, both MS and Sony are concetrating on profitability.. anyone else picture a green turtle and a black turtle racing to the finish line, with a white hare running past them?? |
Well, I think that there will still be another price cut, but I definitely don't think that it will be another $100 for the next round b/c too many things are being added such as the rumble controllers and the digital tuner for PlayTV, it seems that Sony is concentrating more on increasing the versatility of the PS3 rather than simply focusing on games for better or worse, and this will make it take longer to cut the price, obviously. Also, don't necessarily beleive what the corporate PR is saying about pricing......b/c no company would want to tip consumers off that the prices are about to come down, b/c this would encourage the customer to buy later......when prices would be lower and revenue less for Sony, which is why Sony has basically always denied that it is about to cut until a few weeks b4 it actually does cut them, when in fact, these plans for the timing of the cuts were probably made at least 2-3 months before they actually happened.
Anyway, I think that a $50 cut is likely by Christmas.

What game is monolith working on for the wii? |
Well.. concentrate on profitability is the best that Sony can do right now, they are showing bad numbers and they should recover some money spent in order to concentrate in sales later.
Just like Gamerace said, if the 10 years plan is going to work they still have like 8 years to focus in sales.

Yeah Nintendo actually bought Monolith after they started development of Disaster Day of Crisis. Although considering that Nintendo owns them completely it technically makes them 1st Party now

| thekitchensink said: 1. Any evidence? Or just your opinion? Evidence on what? That the limited amount of core games on the Wii are suspect and less appealing towards hardcore gamers than the one on PS3/360? Unless you're blind or biased, you should be able to figure that one out by yourself. 2. So, Capcom, Square Enix, Konami, Tecmo, Ubisoft, Crystal Dynamics, InfoGrames, Monolith, EA, Namco, Chunsoft, THQ, and High Voltage (the developers of those listed games) are all non-credible developers? Well, I guess the PS3 is pretty much fucked, then... unless you mean to say that they're 'incredible' Publishers =/= developers Madworld= Platinum games/clover, Monster Lab= Backbone entertainment, Tales of Symphonia= team symphonia (hopefully), disaster= Monolith (JP studios), Skate it= Black box, final fantasy crystal chronicles: crystal bearers= Toshiyuki Itahana, fatal frame 4= Sudo51, Conduit= high voltage, Deadly creatures= Rainbow Studios, Red steel= Ubisoft Paris, Fragile= tri-Crescendo, shiren the wanderer= chunsoft. Monster Hunter 3= capcom studio 1. The red developers have little credibility to be excited about their upcomming games and blue developers do have a good history, keep in mind though, I'm not saying that those games are going to fail or suck by any means, just saying that they haven't shown enough to be pitted against other AAA core titles on the 360/ps3. Of the blue list, many games have not gotten a solid release date for Japan (if those games will reach the U.S is another story in itself), this includes Monster Hunter 3, Fatal Frame 4, Fragile, and Red Steel 2. Skate It is pratically a port with Wii controls and FFCC:CB could very well be geared towards casual gamers like the previous Wii DQ. Add that with the fact that the Xenosaga games were awful and Baiten Kaitos was pretty much a cardgame, The point that Monolith (JP) is developing Disaster (the action game) doesn't look to promissing IMO aswell. Like I said, it looks like a bunch of question marks, even more so compared to the PS3/360 lineup. 3. The only point I see here is that people will buy quality games and leave shitty ones out. Do we disagree on this or something? The only points that I'm making is that: a. core games =/= good core games b. That list does not look nearly as impressive as the 2008 lineup on PS3/Xbox360 . |
BBsin, you do realized that Platinum Games is for all intents and purposes Clover Studios? The reason Capcom "closed" Clover is because all of the talent walked. The "closed" Clover to save face.

Obviously not. I'll edit it.
Clover/Platinum is also developing a game for PS3/360.
Also, you guys left out Force Unleashed, which will only have multiplayer on Wii...or, at least not PS3 and 360 last I heard. I can't remember for sure about PS2 or PSP. I know each version gets its own special content.
Still, the list of "core" games is pretty bare on Wii and many of the games listed above won't make this year.
I expect Sony to drop the price by the end of the year, but we'll see. It appears the Wii is expanding the market, but as long as games sell as well or better than they did last generation then I don't expect Sony to panic. I also expect a lot of Wii owners to double up on consoles at some point, if they haven't already...perhaps when they get an HD TV.
I'm pretty sure Sony is already "profitable" on sold consoles. What they really mean is that lowering the price wouldn't provide a huge bonus right now. They could be right.
