Forums - Nintendo - The end is near, the 4 horsemen of gaming apocalypse, by Sean Malstrom

I think a big part of the problem with the misunderstanding concerning pack-ins is that, since the Super Nintendo's departure from the market, there has not been a significant system-seller pack-in title with a console. Pack-ins for the last decade have been of the other kinds: the "get-rid-of-a-surplus" kind or the "promote-a-new-game" kind. Not until the DS started getting packed with Nintendogs and Brain Age did we see a resurgence of the other kind, and not until the Wii did we see a full revival of the Super Mario Brothers model: packed in from the start, to sell the system from the get-go to the target audience.

Sony did not release any of their systems with a system-selling pack-in, because their business model did not need one. Theirs relied on the sheer size of their library to appeal to the existing game audience. Microsoft simply copied Sony. Nintendo decided to drop pack-ins to allow them to sell their systems at launch for a lower price. Ultimately, this means that we've had a solid 10+ years without the original kind of pack-in: the kind which the majority of people get the system for. So it's possible to understand why the idea of a pack-in selling a system to this degree isn't widely understood any more.

But so did Star Wars and it was THE most influential movie ever

See my Titanic reference. And Battleship Potempkin was the most influential movie ever.

Actually when adjusted for Inflation and population Star Wars was a far bigger movie than Titanic and far more influencial on the industry.  It created the entire big budget special effects movie industry we all take for granted today.

Having said that - Star Wars is eclipsed by Gone With The Wind as the biggest movie in industry history.

As per GTAIV - It is a major hit, there's no denying that.  And the market is big enough for both GTAIV and WiiFit to be major successes.

Malstrom's writing style is definately over the top, but his insight has proven clearer than most. He is definately worth reading.

Malstrom's sensationalism and hilarious scenarios make his incredibly long articles fun to read though.

And...well he's done a better analysis of the gaming industry than other so-called "game business analysists" so far.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Armed with only his pimp hand, Yamauchi slapped the markets and his dream of Famicom controlling the living room became a reality.

Really love that part in particular. Whole thing was pretty funny. Seems like Malstrom was just having fun playing up on all the "WiiFit destroying gaming!" and "Nintendo abandoning the hardcore!" melodrama you see on the internet.

Oh, but he doesn't do that. Where did you get that impression?

Oh I know he's serious about the impact of WiiFit, and I've read his other articles on his site. I know where he stands, I just meant for this one instead of just writing another article he also played up on the fanboy melodrama probably in part to be entertaining and part to strike some fear in disbelievers by saying it WILL happen in his own book of Revelations.

I think what you said was pretty obvious. Even more when knowing other things he has wrote. He does mock the "hardcore" using the same as i did with my post, which is...?

He writes well. But he is too much of a fanboy to get any credibility from me.

Fanboy => Biased
Too much of a fanboy => way too biased => not worth a read

Oh, you don't want to miss Malstroms writings, or then you do, since they may not please you. By his writings, you can hardly call him fanboy, he does use good examples from business and business theories to prove why Nintendo wins because of its superior business strategy. Read his articles and then tell us he's a fanboy. WTF, all my text disappeared in the first time.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Oh! man!

Just give it up you casuals! Hardcore gaming is here to STAY!!

^^^^ Insight, it would be dumb for Nintendo to abandon hardcore gaming,
it's a market - the point of Nintendo as a company is to make money, by nature it intends to make the most money, inevitably it will attempt to devour anything that is taking some of it's money.

*Pimp hand metaphor by malstrom* That means is Mr. Casual is by order your system of choice makes the most sales and your new Casual gaming becomes...

oh man Casual gaming using that word...

Bzzzt it's so annoying - When Wiifit is released it wont even have an effect on the PS3 or Xbox360 sales at all, both will continue to see increases and dips at points.

The Wii however will manage to meet hardware quota but be able to maintain it's supply with it's demand, until Fall season (E3), at that point is when Nintendo will directly offer something that can hurt PS360 sales.

So really what is there to question or defend!?

The point of playing games is to have fun - if your feeling you need to defend your system then wow - Bullies must be too busy playing Wii to snap these nerdragers into place.

I will just point this straight and simple

1) For the people who still doubts about the Wii, the Wii fit, and saying negative about this article and saying GTA IV will come out as a winner in for the core gamers, just wait till doomsday arrives. Its just 3 days anyway.

2) Sean Malstrom isnt a fanboy, the people who never read his articles should read it. There are facts and research to prove his clkaim about the Wii. he is even better than the so called analysts

3) and finally, this news was a joke, its like you're bashing the ps3 song why? Are PS3/360 fanboys hurt by it? ITS A JOKE,  you should laugh at it, not argue at it

end of core gaming days prediction:

E3 2006-The beginning of the end. Wii introduced

E3 2008- Armageddon. Wii motion plus introduced. Wii Music. Reggie says Animal crossing was a core game. Massive disappointment. many Wii core gamers selling their Wii.
