Forums - Nintendo - Wii and the rise of small/new developers/publishers

Before I begin to post the topic, No More Heroes even with small sales isnt a bombed, infact, its a success:

http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/02/15/no-more-heroes-not-a-bomb/

Looks like all the anecdotal "I bought it!" evidence was accurate: Marvelous Interactive president Yasuhiro Wada announced on the company's website that No More Heroes has sold 100,000 copies in the U.S. Compare that to the 40,000 that shipped in Japan and it's clear that what once was a bomb is now kind of a hit for our favorite video game band, Grasshopper Manufacture.

No More Heroes  sold so far was 0.29 million

Zack and Wiki? 0.36 million

Which means small developers/publishers can have a big shot on developing the Wii, what Nintendo wants in terms of 3rd party support. New faces in gaming industry which means new ideas/new ways to play, and not the usual shooters/sports titles we've seen in every console release.

Im convinced because even Okami isnt in 100, 000 copies YET, only barely 90,000 CAPCOM met its expectations on this game,  and its only a port of the PS2 version and hardly no advertising. Im more convinced because Platinum games  former Clover from Capcom developing a game exclusive for the Wii. And what about the new developers wants to take chance on the Wii? Bionic games and High Voltage was one of them, and High Voltage even made a 2 wiiware game for the Wii, which is good so far.

And what about the wiiware titles? Wiiware titles arent the one that we've seen in flash games and arcades with quick and repetitive gameplay, more than that,  Lost Winds and Animales de la Muerte was one of the games that dont have quick and repetitive gameplay, its a real game.

With evidence above, I can see the big chance of more new/small developers/publishers heading on the Wii.

I am SuperChunk and I approve of this thread.

Im convinced myself too, I only post what I remember, but there are more new developers that is announcing that they want to make games for the Wii. I mean, every week there is one developer announcing theyre working on the Wii, and now even Silicon Knights wants to revive Eternal Darkness for the Wii, just a day before I post this thread.

Actually, when Capcom spoke about Okami sales on the Wii, they meant that the sales met their expectations for how it would sell up to that point, not lifetime.

Still, this thread is fantastic. It really explains how Nintendo opens the doors for small developers (Zack & Wiki doesn't come from a small developer by the way) and allows new creative visions to enter the market.

I do admit, the current line up wasnt good too much shovelware but during the secdond half of this year we will see improvements especially during E3...

I have to say, I'm loving this WiiWare thing. Once the storage issue is solved we should see some kick ass games hitting more consumers.

Here's some data I crunched on how much a WiiWare game such as Lost Winds needs to sell to break even.

If each employee made $100,000 a year and you have 12 employee's and they worked for 6 months on Lost Winds, they'd need to sell 100,000 copies of Lost Winds to break even. If each person averages $50,000, they only need to sell $50,000 copies of the game. Seems pretty easily doable to me either way.

The sequel to Lost Winds should only require about half the development time and half the cost to produce so they'd need somewhere between 25,000-50,000 copies sold to break even. Seems like a great business plan to me. Anything above those numbers is gravy.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

LOL I think you dont even need a 12 man team to develop a wiiware game, and you dont need to pay 50, 000 dollars just to pay up the development cost of a wiiware project, its just too much even with a full scale project. Its just too for the developers. Maybe 50, 000 dollars a year with 4000 dollar per month perhaps?

Z&W is the type of game you would expect to come from a small dev these days though. Its quirky oldschool and fairly low-budget.

Good read overall, but using No More Heroes and Zack & Wiki as examples don't match up with "small developers/publishers". No More Heroes was made by Suda who also had his time to shine on two consoles last gen with Killer 7. Last I remember, Suda himself was disappointed with the performance of his own game, but that could be outdated at this point. Regarding it's publisher, it's Ubisoft, and there's nothing small about them. In regards to Zack and Wiki it's made by Capcom so I don't see how small developer and/or publisher applies here.

You can correct me about Zack and Wiki, but... is Killer 7 a total flop in the PS2 and GC along with Okami and Viewtiful Joe?

Thats why Clover wasnt in CAPCOM anymore... RIGHT?
