Forums - Sales - Blog post on why 360 won't "win"

http://blogs.ign.com/Kinnikumantaro/2008/05/08/89103/

Thoughts?  The guy had a pretty easy target, I guess, setting his post against that pus-brained CNET article declaring that 360 would come out on top.  Still though, I think that more good first party games and worldwide support (due in large part to perceived hardware quality) will help rocket PS3 by 360 in '09.

Dude you realize that your nickname and diplay picture is an anti-xbox360 troll.

How do expect anyone to bother reading what you say and take it seriously when you state your bias off the bat like that?

You have stated the obvious but i agree. just another thought to add tho,

Wasnt the ps3 on the brink of distinction this time last year. i mean look at it now you can never be to sure whats going to happen next.

But this should be the x360's best year for x360 sales if normal console life has anything to do with it

I think the PS3 "beating" the 360 is a forgon conclusion, but I don't see it as bad as most.

Think back to last generation Sony held something like 65-70% of the market share and Microsoft was just edging out Nintendo to keep out of last place. Now we see the XBox 360 which has held a lead on the PS3 for nearly 2 years not (albeit they had a 1 year head start but that's just smart IMO). The 360 has great 3rd Party support massive amounts of games (even if people like to say all they have is shooters) and is capturing a market share that without some kind of catastrophy will be significantly larger than the original XBox's.

So the XBox360 has:
Increased market share
Increased Actual number of hardware sold (barring some huge mess up)
Increased Diversity and Overall Quality of Games
and actually made Microsoft some money

While the PS3 has:
Lost market share (most likely)
Decreased the actual number of hardware sold (if it hits 120mil before 2015 I will eat my shirt)
And lost some of its exclusives.

Don't get me wrong I don't mean to bash Sony they have a fine machine that is a beauty to play on but I think people don't give the 360 enough credit as to how well it is doing.

PS. This is all coming from a BigNintendo/LittleSony fan who will probably never even dream of purchasing a Microsoft gaming system.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

I agree about the lack of first party games. It annoying how they paid Rockstar $50 million for GTA4 DLC, when they could have somehow used that money to increase their first party status. They only own about 4 studios, Nintendo own 8, while Sony own 19 or something crazy.
The 360 is dead in Japan, it's not doing that great in Europe despite the price cut and the PS3 is giving it a run for it's money in NA, it's home territory. Even though it's more expensive with almost none of it's system sellers out yet. We know the 360 is gonna lose in sales, the question is "when"?

I came across a similar article earlier today:

http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/05/12/microsoft%E2%80%99s-xbox-360-sinking-quickly-in-face-of-opposition-from-ps3-and-wii/

It addresses the same points as the one you posted but it's a little more "doom and gloomy".

I have to disagree with this idea that this year will be the 360's best year--I believe it will be its' best YET, but I strongly think that '09 is the big year for all three consoles. Everyone will be in their prime and throwing their best punches. It will be like in an anime show, where there's the first few action-packed, story-heavy episodes, then it'll kind of drift along for a while in '09 and '10, and it'll pretty much be decided by '11 or '12.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Kickin' Those Games Old School.       -       201 Beaten Games And Counting

The blog brings up a few perfectly legitimate points, and it's an anti-xbox troll at all. The basic tenants are:

(1) Why assume Wii sales will simply die off and the Xbox will gain momentum?

(2) The original author was very misleading about his online gamers percentage, and the original article shows how much of a tiny niche online gaming for consoles still is.

(3) Author of original article assumes the PS3 cannot compete with the 360 for games and this will be true, and doesn't seem familiar with current sales trends.

(4) Author of original article doesn't seem to realize that the 360 is only successful in America.

Personally, I think it is more likely than not that the PS3 will surpass the 360.  Niether of them have much of a chance of attaining the overall lead, obviously, but based on the current momentum, known future releases, and the world wide brand popularity, I think the PS3 will lead world wide, but the Xbox 360 will lead in America.

The Xbox 360 leading in America is a big enough win for Microsoft.
