Forums - Gaming - Why have so many franchises went awful, last generation?

Reviews have been taken from www.gamerankings.com

Okay, my first complaint is Star Fox Adventures. It's nothing like Star Fox 64... At all... Except for the mini games, in between levels, but those were nothing. And then Star Fox Assault (or, Star Fox Insult) was even worse. You would have thought that games with better graphics would be better at everything else. Are developers relying too heavily on graphics? And then, Star Fox Command was even worse. Why can't we have a game that's more similar to Star Fox 64?

My second complaint is Sonic. Ever since he went multiplatform, he just sucked. Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog, are two examples of Sonic games, from the last generation, that have been utter let downs. Why can't they stay true to the original formula? Why does Sonic Heroes, jump from being the most kiddish of all Sonic games, to Shadow the Hedgehog, and be the most violent? How hard is it to make a real 3D Sonic game? Why do they keep straying off? And what's with the million characters they have added? Who is Maria? She doesn't belong... At all! Dr. Robotnik (not Eggman; Damn my avatar!) should be the only human. Sonic and Tails should be the only playable characters.

Did we ever get a true sequal to Donkey Kong 64? Nope. Instead, we got a bunch of music games. Yaye! What I always wanted instead of Donkey Kong 64 2. And how about Donkey Kong Jungle Beat? At least it's a descent platformer, but it doesn't have Rare's touch, that made the other Donkey Kong games so good!

And who could forget Crash Bandicoot? Playstation's mascot. Yes, he was one of the greatest platformers of all time. Some say he was, at the time, Mario, and Sonic's equivilent. All has changed after Naughty Dog sold off the franchise. Seriously, what went wrong? Especially in Twinsanity, and Tag Team Racing. Who is Neena Cortex? She's hidious! And the fact that Crash Bandicoot went multiplatform is just an insult. Even worse, Crash of the Titans, Crash's latest game, isn't going to be released for the Playstation 3, even though Crash Bandicoot grew up on the Playstation. Yeah, that sure shows some respect to Sony. Whatever, it looks like an awful game anyways.

Spyro the Dragon... A franchise that often imitated, but never duplicated, Crash's fame on the Playstation. I will admit, his games were fun, although childish. Ever since the franchise moved to the next generation, his games were abysmal. You can't even burn the sheep anymore. When you try to, you end up talking to them. WTF?

Conker... Good o'l Conker... The only 3D platformer in existence, that was rated M for mature, sold over 1 million copies, and got average reviews of 80% or more. What happened? The exact same thing, that's what happened. Instead of making an entire new game, Rare just made an N64 port, with better graphics, onto the Gamecube. Yaye! I can play the same game, all over again!

Banjo Kazooie. What ever happened to Banjo Kazooie? Nothing, that's what happened. There were two Banjo Kazooie games for the Nintendo 64. Why couldn't Rare make two for the Xbox? We should be getting Banjo Kazooie 5 on the Xbox 360. Did Rare do anything on the Xbox after it was sold to Microsoft?

Jak and Daxter is an awesome game for the Playstation 2. However, after the first title, the series took a change for the worst. Every newer title got worse reviews, even though, at the end, all of the games ended up with good reviews... Until one of the later games that came out... But, as the series stands out, by review standards, it was a good series, except for the racing game, but I personally didn't like the games after the first one. The first one was just awesome.

You think that's it? There's many other franchises that really sucked. Why? I have no idea.

I think more franchises have failed in last generation, than any other generation in video game history... Ever! What franchises did you think sucked, and why?

Another thread about Crash Bandicoot, Sonic, etc? Man, you must really love these games.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Well this includes more franchises yes, but alex has made like, 10 threads that talk about Crash, Sonic, or other "Sony" franchises like Spyro or Ratchet...

btw naughty dog and insomniac never owned the rights to crash and spyro. universal did and than sold the rights. and yes the series dropped off a cliff. and blame the devs. no system is to blame for anything.

my pillars of gaming: kh, naughty dog, insomniac, ssb, gow, ff

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

Starfox Adventures was Rare's half assed attempt and most likely Nintendo's reason for selling them off. Make no mistake, the Starfox franchise hasn't recovered since but they've gotten somewhat mildly better.

Sonic has been downhill since it went 3D, blame Sega and every console they've ever released since the Genesis (Mega Drive).

Donkey Kong would have been nice to see, my only fear is that it would have become even more kiddy that what Rare turned it into for the N64. Still a great game though.

Crash Bandikoot, did anyone desperately not trying to placate to the PS1 actually like those games?

Spyro... you couldn't pay me to care about Spyro...

Conker... I never liked a single Conker game... Not even Conker's bad furday... it was just so stupid.

Banjo Kazooie, I think a new one is coming out for the 360, but honestly, who cares. Probably will just end up like the Conker games.

Pac-Man, jesus, its fucking Pac-Man what the hell can you do with it?

- Now for Franchizes which have really gone down hill -

Final Fantasy
- FF8, a fun game, neat mechanics, but dull characters, dull world, convoluted story, the first of the emo drama-whore final fantasies.

- FF9, a fun game, nice call back to the original styles, but ultimately too linear and nothing unique unto itself.

- FF10, a fun game, a little less emo than 8 I guess, convoluted story, too much drama whoring.

- FF10.2, what the fuck, barbie final fantasy?

- FF11, an MMORPG, what the fuck SQUARE?! Main characters were Tidus and Yuna clones.

- FF7 Spin-offs, I know, let's put half of them on cell phone and plan on releasing the rest sporatically throughout the next five years! Hey look at Dirge of Cerberus, I guess its possible to even turn FF7 into Emo shit too!

- FF12, a neat idea, but ultimately sterilized by steering clear of all the elements of the world that made FFTA unique. Characters were somewhat interesting but all looked relatively un-unique and undistinguishable from the world around them, an uninteresting and a half assed attempt at Emo drama whoring. The story is good but typical, the world is... ok... I don't think I've seen so few unique monster models in any FF game before. The main characters were, yet again, Tidus and Yuna clones and the game plays itself for you to save yourself the time of actually interacting with the AI.

To be honest with you, I don't like them nearly as much as you thought I did. They were just some of the only games I played back in the days, and now that they suck, there's not much of a selection of games I want to play anymore. That's the only point I've been trying to say.

BenKenobi88 said:

About 5 actually. But all were some what different, and too many people were criticising them too much, so I decided to make one more thread, similar to them, and just remove everything that people hated, that were in my previous threads.

Oooh! More to add to the list! Bomberman... Who failed in this generation, when Xbox 360 fucked him up. Then again, the thread is about franchises that sucked last generation. I don't know if Bomberman started to suck laster generation. So Bomberman is still unconfirmed. The lowest review that a Bust-A-Move game ever recieved was Super Bust-A-Move 2 for the Playstation 2, so I guess Bust-A-Move flopped last generation. Apparently Mega Man was doing worse last generation. And I know some people wont agree on this one, but others probably will; The Jak and Daxter series! Yes, Jak started off good on the PS2, and got worse on the PS2. This one is more of a personal opinion. However, facts do point out a decrease in review scores for every newer Jak game; Jak 1: 90%, Jak 2: 88%, Jak 3: 85%, and Jak X: 76%. I consider anything with reviews of 80% or more to be good. I guess, technically, the first three Jak's were good, but many people, including me, didn't like the way the series turned after Jak 1. And as for Jak X, reviews classify it as a descent racing game; Nothing really special. So technically, the Jak series went a little bit bad. But, because it did go downhill, it gets included in this thread. Who else... Who else... I would have mentioned Blinx, TY Tasmanian Tiger, and a few other games, but they were just bad from the beginning.

Final Fantasy fails for two reasons. 1) There will never be a 'Final' one. Even if they were to stop production on 13, they could ultimately re-release 1-12 until Satan joins the circus and hops out of that little clown car contraption. 2) Little about them is 'Fantasy' anymore, everything seems much more steampunk since FF7 (At least of the ones I've played) They're only named that now so they sell a bajillion copies to the game fans. Crash/Spyro... who? Pac-Man should've never gotten past that Super Pac Man game on the SNES. It was alright, not great, but the dude's claim to fame was eating dots, not platforming. Can we lump anime games together too? There's potential in a lot of anime titles to make an interesting game.. but out of most of the Narutos, One Pieces, Gundams, DBZ's, there's maybe one or two okay titles amongst the slag heap of bad ones. Though I suppose that would be more ruining movie/anime franchises, and less gaming ones.

Crash, Spyro who??? Crash, and Spyro are to the PS1 as Jak, Ratchet, and Sly are to the PS2. No wait, I think they're even better! Well, maybe not Spyro.
