As I continue to prepare my massive mid year article, I occassionally run into things which are worth discussing right now. Today I noticed the following: Wii will likely hit 5 million sold worldwide (just in 2007) by June 4.
According to the data on this website, Nintendo has sold 4,738,000 Wiis to gamers in 2007. This information is not exact - I rounded all figures to the nearest thousand for each week in each region, so in theory it could be up to 21 weeks x 3 regions x 500 units rounding error off ~ 31,500. Still, that would put Wii at between 4.70 and 4.77 million for the year..
Now, the data on the website is through May 27. Through May 27, Wii has sold an average of 225,619 units per week. That means if Wii has an average week, it will be at 4.96 million sold June 4. The 40k would then be covered within 1.24 days of June 4, 2007 in an average week for Wii. Even if Wii has a below average week, sales would reach 5 million by June 7-June 10, since Wii has yet to sell under 161,000/week in 2007. With production up since that low week, Nintendo is all but guarenteed to clear 5 million Wiis sold in 2007 by June 5/6, with the mark possible as early as June 3.
For comparison, PS3 will pass 2.25 million this coming week, and 360 will pass 2.1 milion this coming week for the year to date.
In terms of monthly averages, Nintendo is on pace to sell roughly 12 million Wiis in 2007 (ignoring holidays, big games, etc), while PS3 and 360 are on pace for sales of 5.0 to 5.5 million each (ignoring holidays, big games, etc.).
When I go through the 6 month data for 2007 (data through July 1, 2007), I expect Nintendo to have sold about 6.2 million Wiis, Microsoft to have sold 2.6 about million 360s, and Sony to have sold 2.45 million PS3s.
