Forums - Gaming - What is wrong with Oblivion? Care to explain?

Thx for all your comments :).

I bought Morrowing today for my pc so I can find out myself.

As with all elder scrolls games its the modders that fix bethesda's stupidity. Download lots of mods. You can get anything from dedicated bug fixing mods to graphical updates (better, higher res textures) to new lands and quests and anything in-between.

Since morrowind is much older its has a much larger amount of mods then oblivion.

Morrowind is possibly the buggiest game ever made so make sure its patched and its got some of the custom bug fixes installed. I can't remember the ones that are really good though.

I rented it, and I just did not enjoy it at all (having no experience with WRPGs) the combat system was boring, the game had no pace, I walked for miles and miles when i got out of the sewer, and got really bored. I barely enjoyed it for even 1 minute

The main complaint people had was the level scaling. In that, because enemies in the game world level up as you level up, the game loses any real sense of progress.

Oh, also, they blew their entire acting budget on 20 minutes of Patrick Stewart, so that the entire rest of the game you'll only find about a half-dozen voices.

I really liked the combat system, though. Nobody's forcing you to play it as a melee clickfest, after all. If you dislike the basic melee combat, I suggest you try out a stealth character; then, all of a sudden, the game becomes a Thief-cum-dungeon-crawler.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

Oblivion was a really boring game. The characters in the game you had no feeling towards them. The main quests and side quests were not worth rewarding. Most tasks provided you with a mere 30 gold coins for a reward. You would spend up to an hour going back and forth and traveling for ages trying to get to places which you have not found yet.

The main quest lacked urgency, you could do all the other useless tasks before even completing the main quest, to save the world from destruction.

There was frame rate issues with the game. The game was full of bugs and glitches which patches fixed up.

The levelling of both your character and your enemies was annoying. You would spend so much time to level up just for your enemies to increase in strength. WTF?!

By the way I am not much of an RPG fan. WRPG's or JRPG's just take too much time to complete and I lose interest quickly.

I agree, a Ninja Gaiden Sigma-like paced combat system would have felt so much better. But the pace of the game is especially slow in the beginning, if you work on your skill levels you can run faster (I also prefer light armour), fight quicker, etc.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

i really liked oblivion. i have it for the PS Triple, i've spent a lot of time on it. I don't play it anymore though

I think in the end it all boils down to individuality.
We all play certain games for certain reasons, maybe our expectations are too high or too low, even when movies are concerned.
Example, I thought I am legend was a stupid movie, loose plot, horrible efx and unnecessary events happened.
But....a lot of my friends liked it

Peppers can be used for just about anything!

A few problems:

Too repetetive

Some major and potentially ruining bugs and glitches (feel free to look up or ask for exapmples btw)

Spells are majorly inefficent compared to Morrowind

Level design is unvaried and mostly bland

Balancing issues; monsters level with you, when you play the game you'll realize that this is not only silly; it makes the whole game uneven

Mission/Quest system and general content is exactly like Morrowind, which is both good and bad

Too many powerful items; it is entirely possible to become immune to all forms of damage (no joke)

Frustrating AI; "radiant AI" was debunked after some major issues (PM or post query if you want to know what they were btw) and what came instead is one of the most hampering features of the game. AI is terrible, to sum up.

There are considerably less skills and levels to be had compared to Morrowind

The main story is quite good but way too short, if you dive right in you can skim through the main quests in 10-15 hours which is pathetic for any RPG

Lack of combat system; you hit and get hit, that's basically it. Nothing special to the genre, this is the one and only field in which Dark Messiah has the lot completely beat!

The expansions: Shivering Isles is basically the exact same as the main game only with different characters and different environments (there are a few innovations). Knights of the Nine adds precious little to the total experience, and even getting it started (which entails visiting all the wayshrines) is frustrating (the shrines are very hard to find sometimes).

Conclusion: I love Oblivion, but having spent 300-400 hours playing it I am painstakingly aware of its faults and flaws.

I imagine it's the same reason why a lot of people didn't like FF8. The enemies level up with you.

Oblivion. Lets make a list (in no particular order).

- quick travel. Made the huge world feel tiny
- removal of past weapons types
- LOTR generic fantasy setting thats boring and predictable
- The oblivion gates (or whatever they were callled). It was fun the first time but they were all the same. I got to hate them very quickly.
- All the strange plant life/creatures were removed (making is generic as said above).
- No choice at all. You either do the quest or you don't. Absolutely no shades of grey.
- Horrible dialogue because it was so simplified (see planescape torment and fallout, they both had lots of richly detailed and well written dialogue that could branch in a number of directions.
- The fact that enemies level with you removes all sense of achievement from the game.
- The radiant AI was nothing special. It didn't live up to the hype.
- Removal of the houses from morrowind. Less politics and less choice from a macro scale.
- Absolutely boring fighters guild quests. (in my opinion).
- Very little racism (see morrowind, the dumner were extremely recist to outlanders, it gave morrowind a really gritty feel.
- Large expanses of the world where you had nothing to do (a problem for all elder scrolls games).
- No children in the game.

Im sure many poeple enjoyed oblivion. I'm not one of them. And that is why I feel bethesda can't make a great fallout game as their games are generic and simplified. Couple this with an inability to make risks or do anything controversial (which really fits in the fallout setting) I just don't think they'll be able to pull it off.

If they can then I'll be extremely surprised.

QFE.  That's pretty much exactly the problems I have with Oblivion.  I went into the game expecting it to be one of my favorites ever and came away so disappointed.  And I tried so hard to like it.  I even tried a bunch of mods to mitigate some of those negatives and it got better but was still rather disappointing.

I see a lot of people talking about the custom magic system being unique, where do they get that from?  The custom spells were so incredibly generic its not funny.  You get spells that look exactly the same but with a slight change in one stat or two that does absolutely nothing since the leveling and stat system was so messed up.

I hated the controls too.  The melee combat system just didn't feel right and I hated the floaty mouse feel.  On a side note, did anyone know of a mod-fix to the floaty mouse?
