who the hell cares who came up with it first? It's whoever who does correctly.

There were motion sensor golf "plug-into-your-TV" video games way before the Wii. Does that mean Nintendo isn't innovative because of that? Absolutely not.

innovate |ˈinəˌvāt|
verb [ intrans. ]
make changes in something established, esp. by introducing new methods, ideas, or products
ex: the company's failure to diversify and innovate competitively.
• [ trans. ] introduce (something new, esp. a product) : innovating new products, developing existing ones.

Notice the definition only says "especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products." That means that you don't actually have to introduce new methods, ideas, or products to innovate. Doing so is simply often associated with innovating. The more important part of the definition is the "make changes in something established" portion. Nintendo certainly did make changes in the establishment of gaming. Ergo, Nintendo innovated.

@Auhim

Well played, sir. Well played.

Using an existing tool to make something which was never done before is still innovation, unless you're really pedantic.

Engines existed before cars, but that doesn't mean cars weren't innovative.

inventing and innovating are two different words. Try reading a dictionary.

This.

Also, why are you complaining about the Wii?  Just go back to playing your 360.

Hmm, well Sony and Microsoft did not invent the microchip but I won't hold it against them to use it in their hardware.

I must have missed the dictionary where "innovation" is defined as "making something absolutely and completely new". Probably because such a definition only exists in the minds of people who don't stop to consider how ludicrous such a concept is. Everything has a basis. Innovation is not creation; innovation is process. Or rather, processes can be innovations. If your process is one which has no equivalent, then it is an innovation. Which of course just highlights the fact that the term is often used only in a positive context; there are negative innovations too, but nobody seems to want to admit it.
