Forums - General - Why don't we consider fat people attractive?

Back in the day, fat was associated with wealth and royalty. It was like 'If you are wealthy, you can eat good." Even in the Bible, a fat person was considered a blessing and earned favor.

I dunno where folks think fat is whack these days.

natural selection changed? it no longer favoured the fat as food in most countries are vastly available?

I don't find fat as attractive myself.  It's much harder for me to respect people who don't respect themselves and that's what I see being overweight as.

One of my friends has been overweight for basically forever.  While that hasn't stopped me from being good friends with him, it's always bugged me.  So I got onto him about it and told him how to lose weight if it he really wanted to.  It wasn't some magical secret, it was just adjusting a couple of his daily habits.

It's now about 5 months later.  He has gone from about 220~230 lbs to ~180-190 lbs range.  Not only is he healthier but he's happier.  And I am too.  ^_^

People who claim that they can't lose weight or whatever are just lying to others and to themselves.

That's a newspaper article from a few years back.

In th times from the begining of humanity until the 1940's fat used to be the social norm for being hot, since the heavier you looked that ment the more well off you were bc only rich people ate a lot to become chunky. Now anyone can, also the fattest foods now are the least expensive.

I really doubt that. If you look at the images of beauty from egypt (Nofretete's bust etc.) she was thin
http://www.ars-bavaria.de/images/NofreteteGross7.jpg
In Greece the aphrodite statues and in Rome Venus (goddess of beauty) were thin as well.
In italy of 1500 Venus was also thin.

From Greece onward the epitome of female beauty was not as toned and muscular as today's image of beauty but fat was never beautiful. A long slender neck was sought after in egypt 5000 years ago.
So in the end I think we can say that society may override images of beauty but in general healthy will be beautiful. That is neither too thin nor too fat. There may be exceptions like really thin models (although I very seldom meet men who think they are beautiful) or fat woman but in general this is not the norm.

 link doesn't work.

Also, I don't believe MOST people (i mean the majority, fetishes don't count), don't consider super skinny (like starved children) as a desirable trend. I believe now that people favour the lean and healthy type.

Fat is now associated with unhealthy, and therefore not 'attractive'.

Just curious, but what are we using as a definition of fat?

quite the relative term.. my defition is that anybody who is somewhat limited by his/her weight. Say...unable to write a coaster because she/he is overweight..

frankly, just go by what's stated on the textbook. Most people use that anyway.

I mean, are we talking fat:
http://blahfeme.typepad.com/blahfeme/images/ist2_1051832_fat_man_1.jpg" width="123" height="101">

or Fat:

Fat girls are like riding a scooter. It's fun 'till your friends find out.

That said, I don't date fat women for some very simple reasons. Have you ever tried moving one once they've fallen asleep on your arm? Oh my. It's just not happening. I can't live with that. The same way I wouldn't go out with a girl who was attractive but a complete bitch. Nor would I be attracted to a girl who was too thin. You might snap her in half trying something complicated in bed.

Why is being interested in looks shallow? I don't get why many people say this. You do know someones appearance can reflect alot about who they are / what they're like? I have 5 ways I can gather information from the world. Looks are 1 of them. Why should 1/5 th of my senses be ignored? Would you go out with someone who smelled bad all the time?

Yes
