Forums - Sales - Wii: Sony doubts longevity

I think it would be interesting to see the demographics of the people buying and playing the different systems. I'm 22 years old and i have a PS3 and my brother has a 360 and is 20, we grew up being big nintendo fans, ever since the NES days. But it seems that the nintendo is just staying with the little kids as fans, is their a way around this for them, I've played the wii and its fun, so I thought i would buy one and went to the store to see if i could get one, there were couple in stock, but their are no games that i want to play on the system. I really wanted to get into the wii, but their just seems to be no games for my demograhic, the mario cart games are fun, but not worth the price of a system, and the other two smash games were fun but not something that would sell a system, for me anyways, plus the wii controller is the worst thing i have ever used in my life, i just could not get used to playing with it.

Well I am not a Wii owner yet but I will be it before this year is over and I am 24. I have two friends of mine at the same age owning a Wii already. I think this "nintendo" is only for kids is pure bullshit and is more about what design you want on the games you play. I like cartoon look and have no problem playing Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart or whatever. Then I can always fill out Nintendos games with some 3rd party games such as No more heroes, DQ:Swords and Project O (the last one is on belif of the devs only). This is of course only my opinion, but I think there is a large "mature" audiance on both Wii and GameCube fans that didn't leave Nintendo because of different reason.

I think the controller is the most fun part of the whole thing, but that is me. I think I would miss rumble if I didn't have that either so I might be a little bit geared towards the Wiimote before sixaxis (which honestly must be one of the worst remotes ever when it comes to fit in my hands).

My main question is: Since Nintendo games seem to be geared towards kids have they already lost the war this gen? i'm sure the wii will sell alot but only due to the price, is the wii just attracting kids or is there some sort of players that want this system.

Sorry but no Nintendo isn't geared only to kids, they are this gen more geared to all that doesn't play before this gen. If they can get the kids and the old Nintendo fans that is good, but honestly Nintendo is more intressted in doing a NDS then a PS2 victory.

Another question is: What do you mean with "is there some sort of players that want this system"? Are you indicating that if I am calling myself a gamer I can't like Wii more than PS3/xbox360? Because honestly I can't find one single reason why I would find value in paying 6000 SEK for a PS3, but I don't say that those who do is some "strange sort of player".

I'm not pro sony or xbox because of the graphics, i would buy a DS over the PSP only due to the RPG's. But The graphics make most of the game ,so is Nintendo pushing themselves out of the future of the systems with the wii?

Nice graphics is always fun, BUT I can't find one game that I have liked because of the graphics. My favorit game of all time is Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri, that game had so bad graphics that you sometimes had to start thinking about what units you actualy moved. Civ 3 vs Civ 2 is also on part where I find that Civ 3 had better graphics BUT Civ 2 had better game play. I am for the moment playing civ 4 but I can still go back civ 2, I do never play civ 3 again.

I also think that there is many people today that have tried Wii Sports and realised that when it comes to sport games the Wiimote might kick some ass. I have given up on fighting games before Wii Boxing, and now I am just hoping that somebody makes a boxing game for Wii.

I agree with most of what you said, but I have to question this. Does anyone really believe the PS2 got to where it is now catering only to "core" gamers? I mean, 120 million core gamers? I just know so many people that bought it (and still is buying it) for games like Singstar and Buzz the Quiz, and because it was just so damn cheap, that I find that very hard to believe.

We're talking about the console and company that saw game franchises like Eyetoy Play, including Eyetoy Play Sports, become relative successes (for their budgets) calling the Wii and games like Wii Sports and Wii Play "just a fad". A company that sells pink consoles, with pink remotes, at a premium acting as if women weren't a big part of the market you have to win to get to 120 million units sold.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

People said the same things about the DS.

You're so right and it is true?! Back then they said the DS would be a total disaster before it released, piece of crap, outdated, etc.etc. and look how far it got? Newsflash, high tech graphics doesn't sell games, so far Nintendo has very much proven that already with the DS.

Oh and I'm 30 owning a WII, what does that make me? An overgrown adult with a childish mind. Besides how bad is that ey?!

If u look at history..... What we have left today is the doings of Nintendo. Not only was nintendo the greatest console innovators, they are also the ones who made history.

Without Nintendo, Sony Playstation would not be of existence.

Without Playstation killing Sega, Xbox will not have emerge.

I agree and I did state my words bad. When we talk about NDS it is often the succes of Brain Age, Nintendo Dogs and titles like that we are talking about. What I meant was that Nintendo goes for wining their old fans and sell more consols too the casual market. They don't try to fight for Sonys PS2 fans, Nintendo want to build a new market.

I think we should caution against the DS and Wii comparisons. For one Nintendo has owned the handheld market for nearly 20 years. And second the competition the Wii will have in the console market through 2008 and beyond will be far more fierce than the competition the PSP or anything else can give the DS. I'm just not convinced the Wii can pull a PS2 and sell amazing for 5 or 6 straight years but I know the DS will. I see the Wii selling amazing for it's first two years, than as the HD gaming market really starts to show itself the Wii will start gradually declining though the rest of the generation. The Wii is likely to be the best seller this generation, but it's not going to be as much as a runaway as some people think.

Which some call the blue ocean, and I call flanking when you failed at a direct assault.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

We probably shouldn't make direct comparisons between the Wii and DS because they're in different markets.

With that said, the point everyone makes using that comparison is quite valid; the NES, SNES, Gameboy, Playstation, PS2 and Nintendo DS have all sold really well inspite of facing competition which was far more powerful and (in many cases) had far greater multimedia capabilities. The reason for the success of these platforms is varied but (in general) they were successful because they were affordable systems which sold well enough to be supported heavily by developers through out their life; at the same time none of these systems were constantly outsold by direct competition for any period of time.

Now, the question is how long the Wii can survive for ...

If sales trends continue by mid 2008 there will be no way that the XBox 360 or PS3 will be able to "kill" the Wii; as long as the Wii outsells the PS3 and XBox 360 combined resources will continue to shift towards the Wii at the expense of XBox 360/PS3 development. By mid 2008 developers will be spending similar ammounts of money on Wii exclusive games as they will be on producing multi-platform PS3/XBox 360 games, which will result in the Wii having 2 to 4 times as many exclusive games as the PS3 or XBox 360 have in total games.
