i installed it on one of my computers and it made it much faster this is a +2 for microsoft. the only thing microsoft can do is make os. (imo)

no. XP and 2000 are their only good OSs. Vista sucks, 98 was ok, ME was failure, 3.1 was ok, the others suck.

NT
Do you mean windows 2000? The wikipedia article says that technically, Vista is an NT release.

@a12331 - yeah, hardware support can be a pain occasionally. Some of the simpler distros aren't that difficult to get working though. I started out knowing nothing, and here I am now using Gentoo happily for almost 9 months or so.

NT initially stood for "new technology" and was primarily used for networked computers. It was more stable than early versions of windows and had many more options for power users. Windows 2000 was it's direct successor. XP and Vista, for that matter, started with the NT source code. Windows 3.1 was basically DOS with a GUI, similar to how most linux distros now have a GUI.

What are people finding faster about service pack 3? Maybe my computer is simply too slow (2.4GHz P4, 1GB RAM) for it to make a difference.

it will make programs after a couple of days, because it has to cache all of your programs and what not

Ooh, skeptcial, the first SP 2 shell I downloaded crashed my system twice, had to reinstall. I waited for the second "edition", that worked perfectly.
What issues have been addressed in SP 3 then SSJ? Performance increases would be nice, though ironically it would create an even bigger gap between XP and "gaming Windows, Vista"...

Hmmm... too bad I have a "Support freedom and not-as-expensive software" version of Windows... If you know what I mean ^^

The SP's can still be installed, but it needs a fix. Won't be till a few weeks though, these things take a little time.
