1. to introduce something new; make changes in anything established.

I'm not sure many of you really grasp the definition of innovation.

Simply put, Sony have definetly innovated this generation. Blu-ray is a completely new format and is substantially different to DVD. As such, it's regarded as an innovation.

The Cell Processor can also be considered an innovation.

Great, based on this information Xbox 360 is the true innovator. Their changes to their online service made it a new better experience that PS3 and Wii are trying to imitate

They introduced bigger hard drive to the 360 vs Xbox (hey that's a change)

They upscale the graphics way before the other consoles (another change)

Now sarcastic aside Dannor I think we all here consider TRUE innovation to create something new that not other system has tried in the gaming industry. Media storage is not true gaming innovation cuz well, duh, we were expecting them to bring a bigger storage unit. The cell we don't consider TRUE gaming innovation because well, duh again, we knew better graphics were coming. So there you go. Nintendo innovate cuz they are the only ones that took a risk at something new out of the blue that has never been used in gaming systems (the Wii-Mote)

What are you looking at, nerd?

@ XGamer0611: Cause the PS3's Cell processor is hard to program. It has no PC structure like the 360.

Tbh, I'd say the hardware of both consoles offers plenty of possibilities. Ever played Super Rub A Dub? That one definitely works on SIXAXIS control. Wii has Wii Sports as a good example.

But tbh the innovation must come more from out of the games of PS3 than the console itself I think (The Wii offers more possibilities, allthough not every developer does something with this knowledge). Projects like EchoChrome, LittleBigPlanet sure deserve the attention when it comes to innovation. And what about a new LocoRoco or Patapon on PS3?

Innovation by definition can be applied to the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons on the PS3 controller. Six-Axis is technically Innovation.

Thus I think the true measure of innovation lies there in of its success which would tip its hat to the Wii and the 360, not the PS3.

Where as the Wii and 360's innovation is the selling point for both consoles, the innovation for the PS3 is perhaps its largest obstacle for success. The laughable Six-Axis which has ruined more games than aided. The remarkably unimpressive PS-Eye. The expensive Blu-Ray format which killed the launch and forced them to cut backwards compatibility just to compensate for costs in cheaper SKUs. The Cell Processor which in its difficulty to program for and lack of available development infrastructure has ruined numerous ports and made developing for the PS3 a daunting task. The PS3 has had to succeed inspite of its innovation not because of it.

what a load of rambling!

ps. possible haze demo out 2day:)

Sony invented Blu-Ray format. PS3 provides brilliant gaming experience with Blu-Ray player, full HD resolution in games, multimedia and internet all combined in the most technologically advanced gaming console.

Nintendo invented Wii  remote motion control. Nintendo Wii provides a fun, interactive gaming experience with 3D motion control interfaced with every Wii game providing a unique and fun gaming experience.

Discuss this  topic people both Sony and Nintendo are innovators of this console generation.

BTW: Apologies if it is a very simplistic approach, I know I have left a lot of information out.

Dude you're smoking crack! The PS3 is probably the least innovative and slightly behind the Xbox360 at that. Xbox360 added achievements, thats enough for me to put it above the PS3 - which innovated precisely nothing. PS3 added... What? It doesnt even do full HD and so far it renders at the same or a lower resolution than the Xbox360. Some innovation you got there. Maybe you're thinking about the creativity of its fanboys?
That's not an innovation, because all achievements are are a little blip at the bottom of the screen saying that you did something. You can do it on PS3 games, and if they're on the Wii, you can do it on Wii games. You just won't get that blip on the screen. This is why I believe that some people are kind fo dumb when they use achievements as a reason that the 360 version of a game is superior.
"GTA is better because it has achievements!" "Burnout Paradise may have had the edge on the PS3, but achievements make it better on the 360" "When it comes down to multiplatform games, I'll pick the 360 version for the achievements!"
Even though in all the games you can do whatever the achievements are on other platforms. For example, with GTA you get an achievement called "Mild Coffee" when you first go in Michelle's house. Is that really a reason to get the 360 version when you can do the EXACT same thing on the PS3 version?

I think Sony created the complete HD videogaming experience, with built-in HD media format, HDMI port and a Hard Drive inside every box (which is upgradable). The hard drive is undoubtedly useful for developers, allows the PS3 to be fully upgradable software-wise, and it also opens the console for all kinds of DLC services (MS being so visionary and ahead on DLC didn't fully compromise with their vision by not including a HDD in every system).

Many of you may or may not see these as innovative. I also wonder if you can call it that. The truth is, it matters for videogaming. Just as having 256 colors on screen for SNES mattered back when the Genesis output only 64 colors mattered back in the old 16 bit days -and sorry for this awkward reference- but it's like that. HD gaming is the way of the future and only Sony created a full HD console.

damn you ride sony hard.....didn't you just come back from a ban? and this is the thread you make? Lol
every system brought something to the table this generation....might be hard for some folks to sallow...

I agree that Nintendo has proven that they are innovators for this generation, but Sony I utterly disagree with. Blu Ray isn't a gaming innovation just as DVD was not a gaming innovation last gen. It is simply a new storage medium that has followed the cycle of CD>DVD>DLDVD>Blu Ray.

Sony has really done nothing in terms of innovation. Six Axis, I wonder where they came up with that? Home button on the controller, I wonder where they came up with that? PSN Store, I wonder where they came up with that? Hell the only reason I think Sony has any online capabilitiy is because MS had Live in place.

You know its funny, the Wiimote might not be possible if not for technological innovations from companies like Sony. And innovation doesn't necessarily mean progress.
