Forums - Nintendo - Okami Wii... First Impressions and more.

You'll find planets of new enemies eventually, though most of them are subsets of a single type. Finding which finishing move to use on them is one of my favorite parts of the game, though it gets hard to keep track of them all (the enemies page of your journal eventually fills out about three pages).

I agree with everything else, with the caveat that it's not just Okami that does these things. I've stopped playing RPGs for the most part, because of the story-to-gameplay ratio. I have a theory that a large portion of game developers secretly wish they were making movies instead, and take out their frustrated ambitions on us with 10-minute long cutscenes for every 10 minutes of gameplay.

And yeah, text speed is annoying. I've yet to find a game that letys you adjust this. You think these companies would realize that not everybody is reading on a grade-school level.

I don't mind cinematics as long as there's plenty of gameplay in between really.  Okami's just bugged me because it was long and it was right at the beginning of the game when I really wanted to get started playing the most.

I'd actually say that Skies of Arcadia has the most impressive cinematics I've seen in ages due to the simple fact that ALL of it is done in-game so to speak.

3 minutes into it... This story is awesome.

6 minutes into it... Still neat, I hope Orochi is stopped!

9 minutes into it... This cool and all but can I get to the game part yet?

12 minutes into it... Excuse me while I check the box.  I meant to buy Okami Wii, I think I may have accidentally gotten "Okami the Movie."

17 minutes into it... Oh look, the game is starting.  I save at the mirror.  18 minutes into it.

You took this section straight out of my mind. . . Literally

Hm. I should be getting this game Sunday, and I'm wondering how my impressions will compare to yours.

As to your intro complaints, I'm an MGS fan, so that shouldn't bother me too much. :P

Some of this responce may be conidered light spoilers to some but I've taken care not to give anything story related away in the slightest.

Time spent playing so far: 3 hr. 21 min. 49 sec.

Okay so now I've had a little more time with Okami, I've gotten another brush technique, done a bit more fighting, and had some fun. Once again, there are good things and bad things I'm noticing.

The humor in the story is amusing. Nothing over-the-top or hilarious, but amusing. I seriously need a picture with Amaterasu cocking her to the left with a "WTF mate" quote underneath.

The actual gameplay is very familiar. You run around and do stuff for people to get items, praise which lets you buy stat increases, and random hugs from Kushi. I'm kind of disappointed with the items so far as there's really no item worth buying to help in battle though buying seed is nice because feeding animals gets you praise. You need to feed the right stuff to the right animal though. Sadly the game won't let me pretend the bunnies are Monty Python bunnies and feed them raw meat. Oh well.

The items and the cash specifically aren't big initially but they become important later on as you'll start paying 200k for new combat techniques etc..  From what I've seen the really expensive techniques aren't required but will help while some techniques are actually very helpful and at least one is required.  The one that was required was cheap tho, only about 20k iirc...and holy crap is it worth the cash you'll see what I mean =)

One thing that is really starting to get annoying is the constant chittering when you talk to people. At first it was a nice touch but it's growing really old really fast. Otherwise the sound is mostly good so far. The music in the game is nice too but I haven't found a single song that was really memorable.

This got on my nerves right away actually. But I've gotten used to it now that I'm in hour 18 or so.

One of the nicer things about the game is that the developers seem to recognize what their audience is. The second merchant you meet kindly explains that you can sell off treasures and immediately follows up by saying that your journal will keep track of all the ones you've found even if you sell them.

I am disappointed with something though. Some of my favorite parts of Zelda games are collecting all the fun items and fighting the dungeon bosses (which are always really fun). So far I've gotten a new brush technique and finished an area... but there was no "boss." Also, fighting the same 3 enemies over and over is getting old. I want some new enemies to play with!

I was thinking this one myself at around the point you are at, so you're not alone.  With that said the "dungeon" you beat is no dungeon....You are seriously just getting started.  There are challenging boss fights coming up and from where I'm standing there appear to be several more beyond the ones I've already done.

It's been fun so far, but not awesome. Here's to hoping it picks up a bit.

Yeah, I saw the combat techniques.  I already bought the "Fleet of Foot" dodge one and the "4 Reflectors" one.   I'm sure there will be a use for all the money I've gotten later, I just hate seeing stupid temporary power-ups for sale.  Those things are almost never useful in any game I've seen.  If they lasted the entire battle and were cheap enough to where I could pick up a ton of them for little money, I'd definitely use them.  However they're too expensive for just a temporary boost.

As for the comment that I'm "just getting started," I'd like to think that 3 hours in is enough time to get to somewhere interesting.  I'm benchmarking against Zelda games (maybe that's my problem), but given 3 hours in just about any Zelda game I feel like I could have accomplished a lot more than I have in Okami so far.

I'm having fun all the same.  I just have my quality bar set pretty high for this title.

Inkfinity stones are actually useful, because in some battles you'll find yourself running out of ink fairly quickly. I recommend keeping a couple of those handy.

Aside from healing items, the others are a joke.

I usually don't have a problem with ink.  Seems like if I ever use too much I can hop into a fight and pick some up off dead enemies.  So far I haven't purchased anything with my Praise yet though.  I've got about 300+ points of it and I'm waiting to see what I need more:  Health or Ink.  I haven't run out of either yet.  The most damage I've taken so far was when I fell into the cursed stream and appeared back on the ground minus a heart.

Time out.

I'm sorry, games should not take 17 minutes before I can start playing. It shouldn't work that way. Movie/Film-makers figured it out a long long time ago. You show enough action/comedy to get the ball rolling and then you show the title/intro credits. The audience is immediately engaged and then you start. The makers of Okami didn't seem to understand that. I know I can skip the opening stuff to go straight into the game, but then I just missed all the opening stuff and have to go all the way back to New Game and watch it anyway. Intros to games should either be brief or allow the player to start doing a few things first before going into them. Remember, we are playing a game after all.

All in all, a minor annoyance but still one none-the-less.

I completely agree with that. I was all hyped to play this game but I didn't get a chance to start it until about 11:30 or 12 at night and I was already pretty tired (had just started crunch). I figured I would get a good hour of playtime in and just suffer through at most an eight or nine minute intro. Nearly 20 minutes later I was thanking God I could finally walk over to a save point and go to bed.

Nothing drains the life out of you more than sitting there and just watching text for 20 minutes. As pretty as it is dumb shit like that is just annoying. Since then I've maybe played the game another hour or so and it's good (and I had the shaking the Wii-mote to attack too) but I just haven't had the motivation to play it much more.

Long intros like that often just really kill a game for me for some odd reason. I'm sure after I'm done with Mario Kart Wii for a while, GTAIV, and possibly Boom Blox I might pick the game back up.

-edit-

My last edit got rid of my line breaks, fixed that >_>

The real juicy items aren't bought by yen, they're bought by 'Demon Fangs.' There are various ways to get these, and believe me, you'll wanna stock up.
