I swapped my 40GB PS3 hard drive with 120GB Western Digital. The process was real simple and took less the twenty minutes. If you use an external drive make sure you backup your data first as game saves and downloads don't carry over. Purchased content can be re-downloaded at no extra cost to you via the Playstation store. You can use a thumb drive to backup game saves.

 

All in all a very easy process. Recommeded if want bigger internal space or if you don't have room to keep an external drive plugged in to the PS3.

i have a 60 GB version. it only has game save files and demos.

I have a 320GB external harddrive, with all the movie and music saved onto it. I use that to stream it.

Loved it. I would upgrade, but 2.5 inch harddrive is still expensive.

I've thought about swapping, then i realized...I've only used up 1/3 of my 60gb so whats the point?

I have a 160GB HDD which I use for all my videos, but now I need to format them properly so that they can work on my iPod, PSP and PS3, anyone got any advice for ripping from DVD? I currently use handbrake, but I am not sure what setting to use

I should do this, but I have enough externals to get by with just my 60 gig.

This sounds like a dumb question but when you put a new harddrive into your PS3, does the PS3 install the OS when you turn the system on with the new hdd? Is swapping out harddrives the only thing you have to do to get it to work?

I use the DVDShrink + DivxConverter (or Auto Gordian Knot) combo I get great quality videos in about 1.5 Gig (but converting can take up to 2 hours). Once they're on Divx you can use Mediacoder to convert them properly for your iPod and PSP.

I wouldn't use Mediaconvert to convert into DivX files though, it never works.

The PS3 OS is installed in the internal memory of the PS3, as is every firmware update. After swaping the HDD the PS3 will only prompt you to format the new HDD, that's it.
