Onimusha12: you presented a theory that even you said was a stretch, and I disagreed with it for a reason that you yourself gave.

Except I gave it as a reason in support of the theory, not against it. You first said you dissagreed with my theory because of it, then you said you agree with it because of it, make up your mind.

Also, as you can see from others' comments, price is a significant factor in purchasing 1 or more consoles. As I've said, I've seen the graphs of launch prices and someone already told you that the Saturn was $400 at launch. You might want to look up the list of inflation-adjusted launch prices before you keep telling me all consoles have been the same price before this generation.

What are these charts? Where are they? And the Saturn does not dictate the trend, just itself as an outlier. Your inflation theory has already been proved wrong and off topic. Move on.

I agree there will be no PS2 and I disagree with your theory. It's not hard to follow that.

You telling me it's wrong doesn't prove anything. I'll find it.

1995, Sega Saturn, $399.
1995, Sony Playstation $299

http://www.westegg.com/inflation/

$299 in 1995 adjusted for inflation in 2007 = $413.28
$399 in 1995 adjusted for inflation in 2007 = $551.50

That is just taking dollars adjusted for inflation.

Much of the increased costs for new consoles has been absorbed by the manufacturers in the case of Sony and Microsoft. It's common knowledge Sony in particular took a serious bath on every PS3 initially sold. The increased costs themselves were due more in part to increased cost of components, increased R&D budgets, increased complexity of hardware, etc.

Of course technically all of those are effected by inflation.

The original topic was supposed to be along the lines of why stick with only one console, which still boils down to time and or money. If that's one of the main factors for buying a Wii, consider the question answered.

Thank you, greenmedic88.

Also, if you google "inflation adjusted console launch prices" the first result will show the charts. 1 is without inflation, 1 is with inflation.

I would directly link but I'm on a crappy PS3 browser. It's seriously the first seach result, though.

Hadn't even occurred to me that inflation was the explanation for increasingly expensive mass consumer consoles. I still remember the $650 Neo Geo with its $200 game carts and the $900 3DO, but seeing as how those were niche products, most people don't count them.

But I still consider that $399 Saturn to be a general consumer product, not a niche product like the Neo Geo and 3DO. And yes, at $399, it was expensive, particularly when compared to the $299 PS1.

The PS2 was actually underpriced upon debut. The DVD functionality alone made the price undercut all the stand alone players of the time.

While again, it was unrealistic to expect a $500/600 PS3 to sell well after the initial frenzy, for what it does and what it is, it wasn't overpriced. Technically, it was underpriced since the per unit production cost was something like $250 over MSRP. It was just expensive.

When consoles do more, I'm willing to pay more. I know not all gamers feel that way, and that's why we have seen success with the Wii.

One could own a Wii and PC and still play a great deal of the games that are released, because of multiplats. I own a Wii, PC and PS3, but my PS3 hardly ever gets used because I prefer to buy games on PC when they are on multiple platforms.  I still like the PS3 as a console though (well, with the exception of the horrid controller), and I hope more non-fps exclusives come its way.

I haven't seen any official news, and rumours have been bouncing around for the last year

i only have a Wii for consoles this gen but may get a PS3 later

So Far I have a Wii, and probably going to keep it that way
Things that are holding me back is Money, don't have a lot of money to spent on games and Time, Don't have much time either, so its wii

personally i really want another console because my wii lacks good sports games and gta4. and then of course the exclusive title here or there. dont get me wrong the wii is incredible and it is still 100x better than any other console but i want the key thing thats missing. and that is sports games and gta4. if wii had those then i would never consider another console.
