That is just taking dollars adjusted for inflation.
Much of the increased costs for new consoles has been absorbed by the manufacturers in the case of Sony and Microsoft. It's common knowledge Sony in particular took a serious bath on every PS3 initially sold. The increased costs themselves were due more in part to increased cost of components, increased R&D budgets, increased complexity of hardware, etc.
Of course technically all of those are effected by inflation.
The original topic was supposed to be along the lines of why stick with only one console, which still boils down to time and or money. If that's one of the main factors for buying a Wii, consider the question answered.
