Forums - Gaming - How Good was the Sega Dreamcast?

In a very short lifespan the Dreamcast saw more new and diverse franchises (and many exclusive 1st party ones for as long as the system lived) than Nintendo created during the whole N64-Gamecube era. I miss the old Sega.

To add to the OP list :

NBA 2K, NFL 2K, Virtua Tennis <-- Sega revolutionized Sport games, again.

They created RPGs:

Skies of Arcadia <---Incredible game, I wish a sequel could be possible :'(
Phantasy Star Online<---that's the first console MMORPG.

New innovative games:

Jet Grind Radio
Space Channel 5
Shenmue 1 & 2
They made platformers cool again:

Sonic Adventure 1, 2 < two games in such a short while.

Crazy Taxi 1 & 2
Cool exclusive racing games:

Metropolis Street Racer (from Bizarre Creations, creators of PGR)

Test Drive Le Mans

Sega GT

The Dreamcast had TONS of FIGHTERS

And to this day most of them remain exclusive.

Action / Adventure games:

Headhunter

Resident Evil : CV <--Best Resident Evil until RE4 came out.

Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future

Weird Shit : Seaman

The Dreamcast was so good and all that in less than 3 years (and of course, there's more good stuff than what's listed on this thread) Wow. I might even hook it up just to play a little BERSERK once again!

not exclusive. I had them for PS2

Well Crazy Taxi went from arcades to Dreamcast in 2000, to PS2 and Gamecube in 2001, and then to Windows and GBA in 2002. So it was a timed exclusive maybe. lol. Point is it went to Dreamcast first. Bu no, not exclusive. But something should be said for the fact that Crazy Taxi is still mostly thought of as a Dreamcast game.

Haha, I'm never wrong, cept all the time! Thanks for clearing that up Ryudo.

@coolestguyever

Looked at what I said at the beginning of that post :

"(and many exclusive 1st party ones for as long as the system lived) "

So yeah, years after the Dreamcast died some of its games were ported by Sega to other consoles, including Crazy Taxi for PS2, Shenmue for Xbox and Phantasy Star Online for Gamecube, etc. All those great titles were born on Dreamcast!

That's one thing I loved about Sega, they didn't rely on franchises except Sonic. They were were very creative and willing to take risks, obviously. I couldn't believe when I heard GTA IV *might* dethrone Shenmue as the most expensive game ever. THINK about that statement, holy crap.

 I disagree.

Sonic, Shining Force,  Alex Kid... they had plenty of franchises.  They wanted to do the same thing Nintendo (and really all) publishers do, they just didn't have enough franchises to pull it off.  Hence the need to take risks to develop said franchises.

I guess an animal backed into a corner really does do what is necessary.  They didn't have the franchises so they made new, oftentimes good ones.  And please don't disagree with me, it might get ugly next time.

:)  j/k  Just kidding.  Actually it's kind of refreshing to be disagreed with in such a civil way.  I mean, you didn't even call me a fanboy! *faints*

Basically, I think that's one reason why a lot of independent companys make new refreshing games.  Most people credit more freedom, but I think it has just as much to do with just not having enough money.

When your a new starting up company, you don't have the money to make high powered visuals that rival the big companys and you don't have the established characters to compeat with the legendary franchises... you don't even have the advertising budget to get it on peoples radars, even most hardcore gamers.

All you've got is gameplay, and innovation.  The things that will get people talking about your games.

In a way I think that's why Sega came out with new games... they couldn't make a game just like Super Mario Brothers because people would just call them out on it. (Like a lot of third partys tried to do by making mario clones.)

I forgot about Xband on Genesis. Wow WAAAY ahead of it's time. And oh yes I do remember the Saturn having a seperate modem as well as reading something about the Jaguar having a modem attachment in Game Players (remember that mag? Was awesome). I can't believe when I posted earlier I forgot about how Sega started improving all sports genres with the 2k series as well. I mean what the heck did they not do right with this system? High powered, online out of the box, wide selection of great games, came out first (maybe not best thing all the time), best sports games. Geeze the thing even broke console launch sales records. This system had everything, I do not get it. Works me up every time. Still remember the day I skipped my morning class to get it at the all new Canadian EB Games.

Ok I did my part, I bought No More Heroes, but they were out of Zach and Wiki.

Ok got Zach and Wiki, now if I could just finally finish Twilight Princess so I can play all these Wii games I got waiting. And no I won't buy Okami.

DNF, now there is a game that should have been scrapped completely. Reminds me of a kid whose been in school for 12 years and still doesn't know what he wants to do. At one point you just need to man up and get a job.

Dreamcast was on its way to success but Sega just killed it (couldn't afford more loses and I guess they were afraid of the PS2 super hype machine) but oh the fond memories I have of playing Sonic Adventure and Soul Caliber on it... And then Street Fighter III and all the VS. Fighters!

Those were the days :)

Sadly, Sega went downhill especially after the Sammy merger. The restructuring killed many of its talented development studios (many talents left anyway) and Sonic Team is not what it used to be.
