Wow. That sounds like a real problem. What are some examples of these violent extreme comments that are not safe for work? Also, where did you find a job where you could be browsing the internet so obviously that people around you can actually read the comments on an article? I want one.

I don't recall exact verbiage, but three items jump to mind.  Something about "we should just kill all republicans."  "We should blow up AI data centers."  "We should Luigi Mangione" AI executives.  The first one was reported and required a few of us to beg for action, and the action was sad/pathetic.  The latter I reported many times and to the best of knowledge, nothing happened, but I also took a break shortly after, so I don't know.

Science, we have delays between instrumental runs, browsing the internet is common.  I have no idea what IT can (or can't) pick up.  But those types of comments bothered me personally and professionally.  I know it is speculation, but where I see the problem is the other versions wouldn't be allowed.  We should get rid of all democrats, we should blow up woke centers, etc.  That **** would be banned immediately.  There is a clear and obvious double standard with the mods.  Anybody who thinks otherwise is foolish, IMHO.  Either way, I found other websites that actually are fair.  I only popped by to check out the PC thread, thus I will be leaving till my next lurking session.

Not sure how you equate data centers with woke centers... Not seeing the connection there... Also not seeing how they bothered you... professionally? Are you like a professional republican or do you work for AI?

But yes, if someone said we should kill all republicans and that was reported and not subject to moderation, that would indeed indicate a problem. Can you provide the example of that?

LMFAO.  You don't understand why I wouldn't want a company device and/or company wifi associated with calls for domestic terrorism?  I mean really?  Frankly, you just reinforced my entire point.

The only way to prevent psy-ops bans is to rewrite the rules unambiguously and objectively.

Here's a great example: Let's say someone genuinely doesn't like rap music. Under the current rules they would be banned for making too many anti-rap statements or trying to argue that rap isn't music (It absolutely is music!!!). Under the rules proposed above they wouldn't be banned just for that. Why not? Because liking or disliking a certain genre of music has nothing to do with whether or not one race is better than another and is not discriminatory towards race.

Just going to explain what I mean by psy-ops BS. Take the example above of someone trying to argue that rap isn't music. Now let's say a mod comes along and decides that the entire reason that the user is trying to argue that rap isn't music is that the user is a racist. The mod in my example is just assuming that they can read the other user's mind and then applying rules against being racist in an open-ended manner. This psy-op ban is the kind of BS that needs to stop on vgchartz. Mods need to stop assuming they can read the minds of users and then banning people on that alone. Psy-op bans are done when it comes to flaming, trolling, etc. as well. As JuliusHackebeil pointed out...

"those rules are not exactly applied on a personal whim, their application is not completely arbitrary, because they are applied in a certain socio-political climate. Every get-together of a number of people develops this. This website has one too and as other commenters have alluded to, that climate is not exactly a hallmark of diversity and individuality when it comes to hot button issues people love to dissagree about. Such a climate assures that vague rules are interpreted in a particular way and not in another.

@_@ If you meant you didn't want to view that on your work device, then I would understand that. But saying "it bothered me professionally" is an incredibly weird way to express that though. Hence why I asked for clarification. I have no idea what point you think is being reinforced by me not understanding your awkward use of language but... congrats on demonstrating your point to yourself I guess?

So, about that post saying that all republicans should be killed. That's the smoking gun dude. It would completely change my stance. I daresay anyone disagreeing would have to come to that conclusion. Can you provide that?

Wait... has anyone actually been banned for anti-rap sentiments? Or anything even vaguely similar? If you have to come up with hypothetical exxamples to show there's a problem, it makes it seem like there actually isn't one.

Lol, whatever you say.

You want to think it is a smoking gun, knock yourself out.  It was said, in a thread where many of us identified as republicans, including myself.  It took days and begging for any action.  It happened and I am pretty sure the thread was accidently and conveniently deleted (or VG search engine is just that crap).

I can't force you to accept facts; thus, you are welcome to think whatever it is you want to think.  But it did absolutely 100% without a doubt, no question, happen.  The comment was from a person who is still an active poster and conveniently a supporter of VG.  It is flatly a disgrace and tells me (and a few others who left) all we need to know.

... Do you know what smoking gun means?

Smoking gun means undeniable evidence. If you could actually show me that, I would have to agree with you.

As far as I am aware, mods do not have the capability to delete threads. The people who may have the authority to do so (and idk if it's possible) are to my knowledge not left leaning.

So, I agree with you that it would be disgraceful if it happened. But, "trust me bro" is not sufficient evidence for me to believe that it did.

If you dont want to find the evidence, fair, how you spend your free time is up to you. But I assume you would understand that without it I have no reason to believe you.

The types of hyperbolic comments you’re complaining about are common throughout the social Internet. It follows that if your company is so unreasonably strict that even the mere viewing of such comments will associate your device with domestic terrorism then it’s probably not wise to use your device on the social internet. The thing is, it’s not the site’s responsibility to adjust its rules to comply with the unreasonably strict policy of your company, it’s your responsibility to use your device responsibly.

Also, your condescending response in this thread makes it hard to take you seriously.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

1) Not being able to find the thread and not wanting to find the thread are two different things

2) Curl's entire point is a group feels marginalized, which your behavior completely demonstrates as being true

3) There is a mod who actively was part of that thread/discussion and could confirm it happened, but is quiet, further proving Curl's point

4) The thread was conveniently removed, don't know what to tell you.

5) I have no reason to make up a story, I just don't.

Enjoy VG, I am sure it is a booming epicenter of excitement with the 5 members who haven't been chased away, yet.

You made a claim. I am not going to believe a claim, particularly from an internet rando, without evidence. So I asked you to show me. That's all that happened. If you either can't or won't, then I can't determine if what you said was true.

Asking you to demonstrate something you claimed is not marginalizing you and is certainly not marginalizing an entire group. Also, I'm not a mod, I'm just another user so this has nothing to do with Curl's point.

If anything you're showing that at least one member of that group, namely you, is looking to play the victim when they are subject to the slightest amount of pushback on anything they have said. When I don't understand something you said and ask for clarity "see you proved that we're marginalized". When I say I won't just take your word on something "see you've completely demonstrated that the group is marginalized."

Now, I'm not speaking about any particular group, just you. If this type of super mild pushback is making you feel marginalized, then the problem is completely on your end and I see why you needed a safer space.

I finally found it.

Post

There was some discussion about how severely to punish the comment. I was on vacation (I was ~5 states away from my home). So unfortunately the comment was unmoderated for about a day.

Unfortunately most of the moderators are kind of checked out of the forum in the first place. We have had multiple people drop out in the past year and a half. And unfortunately even more of the mods are checked out of the politics section.  I am pretty sure I am still one of the most active mods here, despite the fact that I am inactive enough for someone to make a post asking what happened to me.

Politics is frustrating. People are mad whether we act or not, people are mad because we aren't mean enough to some people and are too mean to other people. There have been several users who have never been moderated for their behavior in the US politics thread, who still frequently feel that we're too mean because four people are disagreeing with them. Despite the fact that the mods are doing nothing to them.

People point out that some of this is subjective, but despite people believing that it's so subjective, they also somehow believe that all the mods are on the exact page, and that we're expected to toe the party line.

Frankly I'm a hopeful idiot who still thinks that people can change their mind through having discussions, no matter how terrible their opinion is. I know a lot of people more on the left are disappointed that I haven't punished bad behavior more often.

There are some subjective elements, like what people value, and how they think something should be handled.

Even in this thread, we have some people who think we should be allowed to say basically anything, and people who are upset we didn't throw enough chairs at someone.

I struggle a lot with navigating that. I don't like the idea of punishing someone for saying their opinion. Which is generally why my first instinct is to write a response to someone.

Like Chrkeller was complaining that Leynos only got a week ban. Was that enough? Probably not. I don't know what the right answer should have been. Maybe a permaban was in order. In my ideal world I would just tell Leynos it's wrong to make threats, and nothing else would have to happen after that.  And tell another user it's wrong to be transphobic because of these reasons, and they would just listen to reason and everyone would just go on their merry way.

And I struggle a lot because that's not the world we live in.

And despite all the conflicts that I put myself through to try to be objective and try to be considerate to people who have different views than I do, I am basically one of the first mods to get blamed because I am more active in politics than most.

Damned if and when I do, damned if and when I don't.
