Forums - Nintendo - Most important third party game on a Nintendo system (and why)

The only time I can remember a third party game making a huge difference on a Nintendo console is DKC, and even then, it was kind of first party. But without it, the Genesis would have won that generation in the US and quite easily. DKC 1's reverence keeps declining every five to ten years or so because younger generations who weren't around then keep downplaying it, but there was never a time when a non-Nintendo-developed game had a bigger impact on one of their platforms.

The NES and SNES were quite third party driven, even if Mario was huge, things like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a huge seller on the NES for example (this would be the late 80s/early 90s when that brand was huge), selling millions of copies, and IP like Megaman and Castlevania and Contra hit big on the systems in those days too.

Capcom, Konami, Squaresoft, Enix ... they all became globally recoginized brands on the NES/Famicom and further onto the SNES.

Honestly back in the day I played more 3rd party games on Nintendo systems than Nintendo games even if Mario was my favorite series. On the NES I played as much Megaman 2, Contra/Super C, etc. as Super Mario Bros. and Zelda. On SNES I played more Street Fighter 2 than anything save maybe Super Mario Kart, also played a ton of NBA Live, NHL, FIFA, and yeah Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat 2, Final Fantasy VI (III), Chrono Trigger.
