You could have a look over at the blog of the CRPG Addict.
He made it his mission to play every single RPG in existence from the 70''s to today in a rough chronological order. Just for a glimpse at how many RPGs existed on computers (no console-only titles!), he's at over 500 entries and just started with games from 1994 with still dozens of older games in his backlog.
During all this time, he encountered several times the fact that a game has been mentioned by several sources, but couldn't be found anywhere as no working copies of it seem to exist anymore.

In the 7th gen there was a remaster of the N64 Goldeneye game which was almost complete when it was cancelled.
Given how amazing it was to play the later 60fps remaster of Perfect Dark on 360, the fact the Goldeneye remaster never saw the light of day is a crime as it looks like it would have been an awesome way to relive a classic.

Reminds me we almost got a remake of Shenmue.
