Forums - Microsoft - What was Xbox's last killer app?

Much has been said of the lack of system selling killer apps on Xbox in recent years compared to Nintendo and Sony, but that got me thinking, when was the last time the Xbox platform actually had a real killer app? As in, a game that genuinely makes such a splash that it drives console sales in a big way?

What do you think?

I think Forza Horizon 2, 3 and 4 were sort of killer apps, but then I think the formula got old in 5.

I just wanted to say Forza Horizon 5- I don't know whether it drove system sales in a big way, but it was the most popular of the bunch. Now in 6 I would agree the formula got old.

For what it's worth, I upgraded from my 360 to a Xbox One S when Gears of War 4 came out, a friend of mine bought a VCR Xbox One just to play it. But I don't think it was a system seller on a big level overall, there you probably have to go back to Halo in the 360 days.

Kinect Adventures. I'm serious. It sold 24 million. If you don't want to count a pack in. Then it's Halo 3. It sold over 14 million. Halo 4 did not come near that. Gears were never as big as people think they are. 3 sold 3 million. XBO was a dud of a console with flops. Remember when people were laughing at that brief window in time Splatoon was outselling Halo 5? On Wii fucking U?! XBO had a bunch of high profile canceled games. Once giants of series were now limp. Forza was the biggest thing they had but sill none of them sold as well as Halo 3. Best selling XBO game is GTAV at less than 11 million. No one is buying a Series X for anything. Even Sea of Thieves which is a success was also on PC soooo.

The real answer tho is Kinect Adventures and Halo 3. Halo 3 for sure moved hardware. Adventures is maybe the reverse but one way or another it is the best selling 360 game.

One of the newer Forza games or Halo 3..... Xbox has had alot of okay games.... but the "killer app/game" ? that has been a while.

"As in, a game that genuinely makes such a splash that it drives console sales in a big way?"

I'm not even sure if Forza games do that for Xbox.... Your definition is pretty demanding.
Probably the last big game that moved tons of hardware for xbox, was Halo 3.

If killer app means a game that gets the masses to buy in on a massive scale, probably something on the 360. It's been that long since the Xbox brand was in such a position.

Forza Horizon 6 has been a big hit for Xbox. There was a small uptick in hardware sales in May despite the much higher console prices, more limited stock, and the game coming to PS5 at the end of the year.

As far as a game that moved a decent amount of hardware sales? The back to back releases of Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite in November 2021 would probably be it. Starfield was good, but was a bit of a letdown that meant it only boosted sales so much.

They've not really had a "killer app" since the 360 days. At least in terms of exclusives.

Would Cuphead count? That game almost single-handily got me to purchase an XBO back in 2017. I would also argue FH6 definitely fits the bill. I mean… it is the highest rated game released this year according to OC/MC.
