The stereotype that people bought a Wii, played it once, and never touched it again doesn't hold up to factual scrutiny; the system had an attach rate of 9 games per console, you don't buy 9 games for something you only played once.

Nor does Wii U's failure indicate Wii customers were unsatisfied, simply that the Wii U wasn't a worthwhile successor.

Okay, with an attach rate of 9 games per console that's around 900 million games sold. Let's say 30 million people are die hard Nintendo fans and buy 20 games each. That's 600 million games, leaving us with 300 million for the remainder of customers. Now let's say that 20 million people are buying 12 games each. That's 240 million, which leaves us with 60 million games for the remaining 50 million customers. That would be an attach ratio of 1.2 for the remaining 50 million customers. So yeah, it's completely possible that 30 million Grandmas bought a Wii and threw it in the closet. And at 87 million PS3's sold all it would have taken was 13 or 14 million unsatisfied Wii customers to make PS3 the pragmatic winner of the 7th gen.

Keep in mind the above is all just an example. Remember that an attach ratio of 9 doesn't mean that every customer bought 9 games. It's an average.

PS2 and Wii are pretty similar in attach rates. 9 games per system which is pretty high. PS2 was a little higher at 9.8 and Wii is 9.07

In my country, the US, the Genesis beat the SNES for the SNES's first three years on the market. And even then, it wasn't until they had launched the Saturn and had transitioned to that platform that SNES overtook it. So in my opinion, there can't be a better runner up.

Of the oldest systems I only ever played the NES. I know my uncle had an amiga somewhere, but I never tried it, and never tried anything else. Had a few game and watch games from around the same era. Cannot judge them early systems.

I could never get used to the button layout of the genesis controller. Felt like I needed to create new joints in my fingers to get the combinations needed right. Even if there are great games here I never played them much. Gunstar Heroes was fun.

The N64 had one of the strongest line ups of first party games on any system. Did not mind the strange controller layout but the control-stick made it impossible for me to revisit the games later on. I much rather play the games on later systems like the game cube release of the Zelda games. Still a contender for sure when it comes to the best runner up.

The Xbox was by me seen mostly as a joke back then. But it had awesome online capabilities, Two of my friends that got one had a heat problem and one of them actually started a small fire. A third friend installed linux or something on the thing and used it to emulate SNES games and other older systems. I had fun with Halo a couple of times, a game in a genre I never play. Sums up my whole experience with the Xbox brand. Neve got or even played any of the other Xboxes. Used the 360 controller on PC at least, great controller.

The PSP was the cool kids system for me back in the day. People without "Nerd" tattooed on their soul played it. I wanted one even if I did not really like Patapon or really any of the games a tried. But it looked so sleek.

PS3 is the system that sort of won me over to the Playstation. I had played a lot of PS1 and PS2 games before but the best titles on PS3 was on another level. in particular the Naughty Dog games. Bought my third copy of Resident Evil 4 for the system. Still liked the Wii-version better, but my ex took our Wii when we broke and i needed my RE4 fix. I sort of skipped the whole next generation and just kept on playing PS3.

PS vita... Well, it existed I am told. Never had one, never knew anyone who had one. To be fair I was not much of a fan of the 3DS either. That whole system generation almost lost me as a gamer. Was disappointed with pretty much everything.

Xbox one. No.

PS3 is my winner of best runner up.

So votes wise it's pretty much a three-way brawl between Megadrive, N64, and PS3, with almost zero votes elsewhere.

OG Xbox was also a worthy contender in my book and actually my favourite console of that generation thanks to exclusives like Halo 1/2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and (console exclusive anyway) Doom 3.

Great to see Genesis, N64 and PS3 getting the most votes of the bunch.

The N64 certainly has the greatest top games with Nintendo and Rare at their best, but the PS3 was a fantastic multimedia device and has probably my favorite Sony 1st party lineup: 3 Uncharteds, 2 God of Wars and a Last of Us, all on a single console.

Still, I voted for the Genesis since it has the most varied library of great games overall, although it doesn’t quite have any "Ocarina of Time" or "Bioshock" level titles.

Yeah, Genesis was the first system to counter Nintendo. N64 gave us the revolutionary Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. PS3 is when Sony really turned up the heat on their 1st party development, leading to the juggernaut that was the PS4. All three systems had an amazing impact on gaming that can't be forgotten.

Genesis has something far better than Bioshock. MUSHA!

Yeah - although I voted for Mega Drive, first thing that popped into my mind was OG XBOX - not only it had really good library, that, at least from perspective of console gamers, was quite different than what they are used to, but its hardware marks beginning of the shift to PC-like internals design philosophy of consoles in last few generations.

So the wii sold about 100 million consoles and about 910 million games. Lets say that out of the 100 million wiis sold that 10 million of them were owned by super duper hardcore nintendo fans who bought 50 games each so thats 500 million there and lets say another 20 million were just your run of the mill hardcore gamers who own every console and since theyre hardcore gamers they buy a decent amount of games lets say 17 a piece so thats 340 million games. That means the remaining 70 million consoles were sold to grandmas who had one game wii sports and then threw it in the closet, so really the wii was 3rd place and sony wins another championship

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

Exactly! As a super duper hardcore Nintendo gamer myself I couldn't possibly say no to Redneck Jamboree, Chicken Shoot and Bratz the Movie the Game!!!
