Or maybe people have played the game already? I have a Switch 2, but had already waited so long that I finally played it on PC when it came out. A lot of people who have a Switch 2 have other platforms as well.

On the other hand, for a more apples to apples comparison as two later ports, 20k first week on PS5 to 23k on Switch 2, and the PS5 version was just a year late compared to 6 years for Switch 2.
PS5 version was also a proper physical release IIRC.

It really isn't because you got FFVII PS5 version for free when you own the PS4 version. Expecting huge numbers from the same userbase seems unfair. Thats comparing BOTW switch 2 sales with the switch version.

It's not really a fair comparison to stack the original release against a port releasing 6 years later either, especially when these are physical numbers only and FF7R on Switch 2 isn't a proper physical version.

I know that, I was just pointing out the numbers and I expected a lot more.

To be honest I was also expecting a bit higher, though I did kinda forget about the key card factor.
Given that the game's director has stated on social media that there are worldwide shortages of it though, it would also seem Square under shipped it somewhat, possibly due to being overly cautious and not wanting to over-produce.
More then saying the sales are either good or bad, I think it makes more sense to contextualise what the numbers mean...
Of course we need to wait to see legs but incase it's a typical JRPG nose dive, then it right now appears that there isn't a huge audience on the Switch 2 for this kind of AAA JRPG, and or the audience already played it on Playstation/PC (multiplatform ownership).
Unlike what we see with some Microsoft's late port efforts on Playstation where they go on to do bigger numbers than many new game releases (Forza was the one of the best selling games on playstation in 2025, Sea of Thieves in 2024)
Switch 2's userbase is still very young, so plenty of potential for sales to hold up over time

PS5 also only had a tiny 600k userbase at the time of it's release.

Multi-console ownership is probably high in Switch 2's userbase at present, simply cos the kind of person who'd buy a new console in its first 8 months is likely to be an enthusiast, and enthusiasts are likely to own multiple systems.
On a global scale, the game sold out at a lot of places, so demand does seem to be higher than Square's expectations.
