23k [NS2] copies sold in Japan during opening weekend according to Famitsu. A bit lower than I was expecting though solid figures all-in-all. I believe this makes for the largest non-first party debut on NS2.

Cheers; my gf actually already picked it up on PS5 so I may give it a go there sometime, probably won't be my thing but it can't hurt to try. |
If you give it a go, I would be curious on your thoughts. Between dodge, parry and jumping counters. it doesn't feel exactly turn based. Feels like Final Fantasy + Dark Souls + Sekiro. The battles are quite intense.

Thats really not as much as I expected, maybe it dosen't include digital copies. I was hoping to see it do a lot better because there is a huge market for RPGs in Japan, but it seems Final Fantasy no longer meets the demand for that market compared to Square Enix's other powerhouse franchise, Dragon Quest, which has been monumental in Japan.

23k in Japan so world wide that's less than 100k? Roughly 1/4 of Switch 2 sales are from Japan

Physical only, though still I’m not sure the sales figures can simply be multiplied by four to accurately estimate WW figures. Accounting for digital, a debut of 200k WW would be pretty darn solid for 6yo port of a game frequently listed at $10-20USD.
I believe the sales worldwide are better than the Japanese ones. Overall FF is much more popular abroad now. Japan is simply an unimportant market for the IP going forward.

I think multiplying by 4 is too much since FF is still the most popular in Japan even though it's declining. 23k could be half of it's sales world wide tbh

Nah, FF XVI sold 336,027 units in the first week in Japan, and the game sold 3M units worldwide in 5 days.

336k in Japan without digital. Including digital that's easily over 600k in Japan so that's around 1/5 of it's sales in Japan and don't forget PS5 sales in Japan is like less than 1/10 worldwide
