[Weekly Software & Hardware Sales] "Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" takes the top spot! Sales for the Switch version also increase, with both versions entering the top 10 [1/12-1/18]

Famitsu's sales rankings. This time, we bring you a summary of estimated weekly sales figures for game software and hardware from January 12th to January 18th, 2026 in Japan.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the popular game Animal Crossing New Horizons has been released, where players can enjoy a slow life while doing DIY with the residents in a world where time flows at the same rate as in reality. New features, such as high-definition graphics, mouse controls, and in-game chat, have been added, making for a more intuitive gameplay experience, which has been well-received, leading to the game taking the top spot.

Since the game can be played by purchasing an upgrade pass (550 yen [tax included]), it appears that a certain number of users also purchased the Nintendo Switch version, with combined sales of both versions reaching 40,419 units.

While there were some changes in the rankings from second place onwards, this week's regular top 10 titles remain mostly the same. Mario Kart World and both versions of Pokemon Legends ZA and Momotaro Dentetsu 2 continue to show steady sales.

Nintendo Switch 27k in its ninth year.
Lite once again the top selling form...
73k in three weeks...
24.333 weekly base line so far.
Of course it will slow down sometime after March.
However, It's showing signs that it can sell a million...

Again the most boring chart around lol. The US chart is far more exciting. People play more than just games from a single publisher lol!

Switch 1 selling surprisingly well…hmm. I wonder what's up with that? I wouldn’t suspect Animal Crossing to be the reason, but hard to say. Switch 2 also starting off quite strong! Nearly 70k/wk is a powerful baseline (isn’t that like double what Switch 1 debuted in 2018?).

Crazy that we are now in year two of NS2. I remember when the mere existence of this system wasn’t even confirmed. Dang!

Funny that argument doesn't show up in European sales threads when it turns out they buy PS5 to play EA Sports FC and CoD. When Nintendo benefits from people buying their console to play the same games its boring, but when PS dominates Europe on the backs of the same games every year its not boring?

The most boring chart is the European one I’m sorry.

The American one is far better with Nintendo exclusives and Sony ones too.

All charts are usually kinda boring if they dont feature games you like.

Reading the messages made me curious, what were the Japanese charts like 20 years ago?
