Breakdown article is now live.

Edit: Mat didn't give the order of XS and NS1, however, given what he said a few months ago the XS most likely outsold NS1.

It behooves to have outsold it...

Ultimately 4.4 million for Switch 2 sold through 7 months and in its first year in the US is still fantastic, still the best selling hardware out of the gate in the US by a large margin over PS4, Switch 1.

Looking back at older holiday seasons though, man have things changed like Dec 2011 (estimates):

Dec, 2011:

360 - 1.73m
3DS - 1.60m
Wii - 1.06m
PS3 - 0.95m
DS - 0.63m
PSP - 0.26m

You can definitely see there's much less hardware overall being sold today. Granted I think this was actually the 3DS' best holiday season in the US, it would be downhill from here.

For Dec 2012 I get:

Xbox 360: 1.4M (-17.6%) ["More than double the amount of the second place console in the U.S. in the month of December."]
3DS: 1.25M (-21.8%)
Wii: 475K (-55.2%)
DS: 470K (-25.4%)
Wii U: 460K [The Wii launch was 604K]

Trunkswd, do you expect Nintendo Switch 1 to have sold again more in Europe than in  North America this special month?

Its soothing that it approached 300k units sold in Na

Than in North America? No. I expect Switch 1 to have sold more in the US by itself than in Europe. The little bit of December sales for Switch 1 in Europe we have is showing a bigger percent drop year-on-year in Europe than in the US.

Some 2025 US video game sales fun facts:

- 49% of PS5 and 66% of XBS hardware sales in 2025 did not include a physical media drive
- 13% of PS5 purchases in 2025 were of Pro models
- PlayStation Portal now has a 7% attach rate to PS5 hardware LTD

Nintendo Switch 2 finished its 7th month in market with a life-to-date US installed base of 4.4M units, nearly double the installed base of the original Nintendo Switch on a time-aligned basis.
Nintendo Switch 2 remains the fastest selling video game hardware platform in tracked history. Unit sales of Nintendo Switch 2 are 35% ahead of PlayStation 4’s sales pace after 7 months in market.

Nicely done; so much for it being the next Wii U.

The trick now will be to maintain this momentum this year.
Pokémon Pokopia should help with that, and hopefully soon the usual Direct will arrive and unveil more of this year's first party slate.

So after a terrible November December was thankfully ok for the US though it's not as good of a recovery as holiday 2023 had after a worse than expected November. PS5 did was expected while Xbox Series and Switch 1 did somewhat better than expected whereas the Switch 2 didn't do great but it's still a significant improvement over November by selling over twice as much ending its first year on an alright note. Next will be seeing if this holiday slowdown is an outlier or not since it will do great in Japan this year for sure but Europe and especially the US will be tougher.
