Switch 2 sales stumble over Christmas

One senior Nintendo employee told me that a “complicated economic landscape”, mixed with higher price points and “the absence of a major Western game” during Christmas could make for tough comparisons with Switch 1, but overall, he’s proud of what was accomplished during a tricky year.

Already saw this: it’s a bait headline in order to drive site traffic.

The data they cite very clearly demonstrates that NS2 is cruising along very well: Switch sold over 4mil in December 2017 alone, and TGB reports NS2 as having performed even better than that in most regions. This goes well beyond Nintendo 6mil shipping projection *for the entire holiday quarter*. (And that’s not even mentioning the fact that most comparisons here are 3/3-12/31/2017 against 6/5-12/31/2025.)

NS2 is likely around 17-19mil shipped as of 12-31-2025. It’s insane to call that a “slump.”

Switch 2 sales stumble over Christmas

Nintendo Switch 2 sales momentum slowed over the key holiday sales period, particularly in Western markets.

It follows a huge launch for the console in June, when Switch 2 became the fastest-selling game console with over 3.5 million units sold in just four days.

The Game Business understands that Switch 2 sales in the US over the holiday period (November – December) was down by around 35% compared with what the Switch 1 delivered during the same period in 2017, which was when it launched. This follows a report from US data tracker Circana, which revealed that US console sales overall had their worst November since 1995.

There are also mixed results across Europe. In the UK, Switch 2 sales for the last eight weeks of the year were 16% lower than what Switch 1 managed during the last eight weeks of 2017 (NielsenIQ data).

However, when we add in Switch 1 UK sales, the overall number of Nintendo devices sold during November and December 2025 are up 7% compared with the same period in 2017. Overall for the year, Switch 2 UK sales are 6% higher than what Switch 1 managed in its first year (which was also on sale for 14 extra weeks).

The most disappointing result was in France, which is typically one of Nintendo’s key European markets. According to data shared with The Game Business, Switch 2 sales in France last year were ‘over 30%’ lower than what Switch 1 achieved in its first year. As a result, the UK was bigger than France for Switch 2 sales in 2025.

France was an outlier in terms of full year results. Nevertheless, all major European markets saw a slowdown in Switch 2 sales momentum over the Christmas sales window.

One senior Nintendo employee told me that a “complicated economic landscape”, mixed with higher price points and “the absence of a major Western game” during Christmas could make for tough comparisons with Switch 1, but overall, he’s proud of what was accomplished during a tricky year.

This thread is about PS5 and about November. This news doesn't belong here

Maybe you should create another thread

If you look at the title of the thread, it's about both PS5 and Nintendo consoles from Chris Dring holiday sales pre-black friday. This is further information about the rest of the holiday sales period fpr Nintendo and completely relevant to this thread as it finishes the holiday sales data from him. Could it have been a new thread? Sure but it doesn't have to be as this news is relevant to the first part of this thread. It's all from Chris Dring and all relevant.

The Switch 2 sales are on a bad trajectory outside of Japan. That's what I feared and that's what is happenning.

The console is overpriced, especially in Europe and will suffer because of this. There are no easy fix unless Nintendo is ready to cut its profits by slashing the price.

The launch was massive with the hype and the big supply, but now it's long gone. France being lower than UK is a big failure.

nah the Switch 2 will do very good.

And they have avoided the tariffs, will they still be able doing it in the following years i wonder?

449$ dollars are 390€, NS2 price in France is 469€(vat included)

As someone aforesaid Nintendo Switch had a 3 month head start though.

$449 doesn't include taxes. I live in NY and sales tax is a little over 8% here, which would bring the price up to $485+

Consoles are expensive

Also more people are having to choose between eating and heating their homes so yeah cash is very tight at the moment

Regardless, circana has stated the information dring has for December is not from them and as of right now no source is given. I would wait for Nintendos report. They surprised everyone with their last report if I remember correctly. Didn't stop the doom posting though mind you.
