Call me a conspiracy theorist, but the more I think about it, the more I think COVID was an inside job meant to clean house of the world's elderly and sick people and essentially soft reset the world's population without starting a full-blown World War 3. But it was botched as COVID... really isn't THAT much more dangerous or severe than the flu when you look at it. So, they may try again in a few years with something MUCH worse.

PS2 did have a killer app at launch, DVD, it was the cheapest DVD player on the planet this is highlighted in how in Japan the biggest seller at PS2's launch was The Matrix DVD. Lack of DVD is one major reason DC lost Japan so quickly to the PS2 despite a really good start in the region, brand perception is one thing but it's not as key as a solid line up which PS2 had that's why people got it and DVD covered that in Japan for the first year.

In it's first year in the west mean while which was the second year for Japanese consumers (we still had staggered launches back then) PS2 had GT3, FFX, Jak and Daxter, Onimusha, Devil May Cry, MGS2, Silent Hill 2, Red Faction and the break out hit of that decade GTA3.

Smash Bros is my vote. And I say this as somebody who probably likes it the least of Nintendo's big IPs

I put it over Mario Kart and Pokémon because it feels like those games have more overlap with other series and are less likely to be an independent system seller.

Smash Bros is able to use Nintendo's collective IP-base to get people into it. Also it introduces people to characters from their other games and sells those games for them. So many people were introduced to Xenoblade from playing Smash Bros, as an example.

How is a console that sold over 1.5 billion software units a "glorified cheap DVD player"? The only way this comment makes any sense is if the PS2's attach rate was relatively low but it isn't low at all. It's higher than most consoles at nearly 10.

I mean the comment you replied to made it clear this was a big factor in just one place for just its first year. The DVD player aspect made way less of a difference after that since the cheapest DVD players quickly became a lot cheaper than the PS2 so it wasn't long till the PS2 was an expensive DVD player considering by 2003 it was possible to get one for less than $50. Also the 2nd paragraph went into how good its software line-up was in its first year in the west due to the staggered launch.

The games still sold systems though; it would have sold less without GT3 or GTA or FFX or MGS2.
