Forums - Nintendo - Update: Just finished my N64 Collection!

Nice collection, congrats! Wave Race I feel is the most obvious one to add when going for “all killer no filler”. In the same vein I would skip Shadows of the Empire and Winback; I have owned both and they are very mediocre games in my opinion, already at the time and definitely not worth going back to in 2025. Other than that, the OG Smash Bros was also a ton of fun back then. And I have not owned it myself but remember 1080 snowboarding was seen as the best snowboard game on N64.

I enjoyed Shadows of the Empire for what it was. A short but fun game. Winback I'm not so sure on. OG Smash just feels outdated by Melee. At least with Mario Golf and Tennis they have GBC connectivity to make them unique from the GC sequels. 1080 Snowboarding is definitely one I should add!

Nice collection! You chose very wisely :)

I'm envious of Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth and Sin and Punishment. I don't own the former, and only have the Virtual Console version of the latter.

Here are a few I would recommend if you're interested in expanding:

  • 1080° Snowboarding
  • Beetle Adventure Racing
  • Excitebike 64
  • Extreme-G
  • GoldenEye 007
  • Mario Kart 64
  • Rayman 2: The Great Escape
  • Wave Race 64

Goldeneye runs in 240p, which is really really pixelated. You can't really see enemies from too far off in it. The rest, I agree with as recommendations! Looks like Beetle Adventure Racing and 1080 are making the list for sure! 3rd time someone mentioned them both!

Ok so if I added 7 more (one more stand's worth) I think I would add 1080 Snowboarding, Beetle Adventure Racing, Wave Race, Wipeout 64, Mario Kart 64, Pokemon Stadium, and GoldenEye.

Edit: Yeah I'll add those 7 over the next year! Thanks for the recommendations, everyone!

Stadium 2 has all 251 Pokemon. No need for Stadium 1.

But it's a completely different experience. The trainers and their teams are different and use different strategies. Gen 1 has unique rules and mechanics (critical hits tied to speed, Hyper Beam doesn't need to recharge if it KO's the oponent, sleep needs a full turn to wake up, speed decrease from paralysis can be patched up by buffing any stat, special is a single stat... And more. Not to mention the prizes you can win and transfer to GB games are much more interesting (starter Pokémon, fossiles, etc.).

Playing Stadium 1 is different enough to be worth playing even if you already own Stadium 2.

I did not know this! Now I'm going to have to watch some videos on it and decide whether to get it or not. Thanks for the info!

Don't mention it. Graphically they are almost identical (though Stadium 2 has an edge in resolution thanks to the Expanssion Pack), but as I said, the approach to battles from both you as a player and the team construction of the enemy trainers is much different.

I don't mean to intrude, but I just want to caution that Doom 64 plays quite awkwardly on N64. I've tried so many controller configurations and never found one that really works.

I would strongly recommend playing the game via the modern port by Nightdive. The revised control scheme lets the greatness of the game shine through.

Yeah maybe no Doom 64 then. If it controls like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark then I'll enjoy that. What exactly is wrong with the controls?

I actually love that classic Turok control scheme, where the C-buttons function as a second analog stick. I could never recreate that in Doom 64 though.

By default, you walk forward and backward and look left and right with the analog stick (or d-pad). And you strafe with the L and R shoulder buttons. It's not great. Now, you can tweak things by remapping buttons, but you can't remap the analog stick. So, if I recall correctly, that means you can never have forward/backward/strafe left/strafe right all on one stick or four-button group, and look on another. You don't need to look up/down anyway, but having separate zones for move and look is really important to me.

Also, and this is just a kick in the pants, your remapping isn't saved to memory when you turn off the system. You have to re-enter your changes each session.

Oof. Yeah, I also love the GoldenEye/Turok controls. Doom 64 sounds like a pain to control. Will buy the remake then.

My apologies Cerebral. I didn't see Perfect Dark peaking up back there lol. So I take it you must have the expansion pack installed? If so, do you play Perfect Dark in high-res mode, or regular mode?

Mischief Makers & Sin & Punishment & Goemon. You did right.
