Same. Frame looks interesting but I have no idea what the specs mean :)

Frame has double the memory, double the internal storage plus eye tracking and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is built for top-tier smartphones with a more powerful CPU and GPU, faster AI performance, and higher display capabilities. In contrast, the XR2 Gen 2 is based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 architecture but is optimized for extended reality (XR) with features like improved positional tracking and lower latency camera passthrough.
Quest 3 started at $499 for the 128GB model now phased out with the 512GB model for $499. It's heavily subsidized though, Meta still loses over a Billion dollars a month on their VR platform.

I doubt Valve will want to subsidize it like Meta. PSVR2 is now down to $399, cheaper than Quest3 but of course you need a PS5 or PC adapter to use it, wired only.
$599 I might be interested depending on reviews.
Sadly he only tried HL Alyx, streaming, and then they went on about playing your flat games on a big screen, which really isn't as nice as they make it out to be. It always feels like sitting too close to a low res tv.
Will have to wait for some actual reviews.

I think this is looking like Valve slowly expanding their audience, which is probably exactly what they're aiming for. It's probably a low-risk effort that's going to pay off a bit in the long run.
I honestly have no idea how the whole Steam library could be optimized for this automatically - or even manually. I think the best that could happen is optimized settings for Steam Machine for each game, but that would have to be on a per-game basis. I don't think that happened with Steam Deck either. That said, Steam Deck certainly seems to have received some attention from developers, so depending on how things go, this might too. I don't know how far exactly developers have gone to support Steam Deck, but I suspect it's not a lot, so personally I wouldn't expect anything drastic. Still, this could end up being one of the devices developers ensure their games run reasonably on. |
If it sells well enough, I could see them hiring some random dude. That just plays a few hours of each game, testing out in-game settings.
There would have to be a toggel in steam for "launch games at recammended steam settings for x decide" thingy, and the game at launch, launches with the setting that hired dude, found to be the for performance/graphics the system could run.
Leaving it up to developers, is not a great option imo.
Steam would need to test each game individually.

8 Gen 3 vs 8 gen 2 is anything from 15% in 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme, to around 45% in Solar Bay, which is RT heavy. 8 Gen 3 is first one that's advertised as being able to run more modern game pipelines due to much improved RT performance.

Ah, I doubt there are any VR games that use RT... Will it be able to run CP2077 with VR mod standalone, probably not?
(Foveated streaming will of course still make CP2077 shine on Frame)
Can PCVR mods run on standalone headsets at all?
Guess not, thanks AI :/
You cannot install PCVR mods directly onto a standalone headset and run them without a computer. Your options are to use your standalone headset as a PCVR device by linking it to a powerful PC, or to find specific, separate mods that have been created for the standalone version of the game.
Maybe paired with the GabeCube :)

Yeah, Frame is "streaming first" VR (and it seems its exceptionally good at that), its standalone capabilities are just a bonus. That said, HL: Alyx is supposedly to get native Frame port.
Valve claims the Steam Machine offers equal or better performance to 70% of PCs currently out there:

Is that good or bad or totally irrelevant?
It also means 30% is already better than the Steam Box, which would be the 30% that care about having better performance. Steambox is not for those that already game on a 3060 or better. (Well as secondary box maybe)
It also means 70% doesn't care much about performance and then it totally depends on the price of the Steam Box whether it's a viable 'upgrade'.
With the power of the device estimated anywhere between Series S and PS5 Pro, what is the incentive for console gamers to give up their existing libraries and start over on Steam. It would have to be cheaper than a PS5, on par with a Series S.
As we've seen with console reveals in the past over and over, price is everything, next to marketing. Plus marketing has to be a lot better as it's not coming to a shop near you. Articles saying PS5 should be worried are about as believable as Switch should be worried over SteamDeck.
But it will sell some. It's definitely an upgrade over my old gaming laptop and a lot easier to connect to the TV. Easier as in less awkward compared to balancing a laptop in front of the TV lol, I got it to work with 2 controllers playing Coridden together, but it's just too much hassle.
Anyway it all depends on the price.

Confirmed: 70%+ of the master race play on weaker systems than a 5 year old console.
Or does this percentage account for office PC's and non-gamers? lol.
