Heroes of Might and Magic III

Turn based strategy do not get better than this. Even if I can see many flaws with this game, probably more than any other game reaching my top 20, I have to recommend it. The different fractions catches the fantasy feeling greatly. The resource handling and tactical elements demand strategic thinking not mastered even after several play throughs. The higher difficulty levels will feel impossible. But know that they are not.

If you like turn based strategy in a fantasy setting of knights and dragons give it a try. But beware, when you think you only played for an hour you will find out that it is already midnight.

#5 - The hero of this game (and its remake) looks to play an important part in the next franchise installment in February
#4 - You might describe this game as Kefkaesque
#3 - Microsoft is remaking this game, minus the multiplayer, which sort of makes sense since the competitive multiplayer scene didn't explode until its sequel
#2 - The remaster of this seminal "immersive sim" game was planned for February 2026, but it has been delayed to an unspecified date
#1 - This game essentially quadrupled the sales potential of its series, by going back to its roots and taking inspiration from successful open world games

#5: Resident Evil 4

#4: Final Fantasy VI

#3: Halo?

#1: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

5 I think is Resi 2?

3 I'm guessing might be the first Halo?

1 I'd say Breath of the Wild?

You are both correct, on all of those!

Resident Evil 4

Survival horror entusiasts might not like this as much and I can see why (no I cannot, but I try to be polite). This game focuses more on action, and spending bullets on enemies is as much of an investment as it is a cost. It does not take itself to seriously and it actually is not that difficult to finish. But it is so well crafted, you will feel both powerful and helpless. It encapsules the “male fantasy” perfectly.

If you do not care for linear games, skip it, otherwise don’t.

Warcraft III

This mash up of RPG elements with RTS spawned more game mods and even whole genres than any other game I can think of. The music is awesome, the character voices are quotable to infinity and the custom games are so varied and fun that you really do not need another game. Well… at least that was true when the original released. I’m still butt-hurt that the game I have spent the most hours playing really is no more. Sure there are ways to play offline and even online but with more hassle and less players. But what this game was back in 2002 in value of entertainment per money payed will probably never be repeated.

Recommended for anyone with a time machine who still can experience it in its full glory.

Final four games left

Current list - https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=249858&page=1#6

10 - Resident Evil
- This game, which launched a major franchise, was originally conceived as a remake of another title.
- “Wow, what a mansion!” - just one of several iconic lines from this game that’s known for its cheesy dialogue.
- This game coined the term ‘survival horror’

05 - Tomb Raider
- Yet another re-working of this game was recently announced for release next year.
- The well known heroine visits Peru, Greece, Egypt, and Atlantis in this title that launched a major franchise that has gone beyond the boundaries of gaming. As of writing, it currently has three movies, several comics, and an animated show on a streaming service to its name.

03 - Super Mario Bros 3
- In this game, the hero can take flight for the first time. There are three power ups that allow him to do this.
- Whistles can whisk you away to other worlds.

02 - Tomb Raider II
- Some feel the abundance of human enemies in this game lessens the sense of isolation the previous game did so well. By the end of the second level, you’ll have come across more human enemies than you will have done in the entirety of the previous game.
- This is the first sequel to the game in clue number five.

So like always I have some major catching up to do. Quick fire time, once again!

#29: Hades (Switch) - The rogue-like formula perfected. Amazing sense of progression,  a story that advances with your failures, countless lines of dialogue for every situation, memorable characters all of this backed by solid and varied gameplay.

#28: Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - My favorite entry in the series because of how much fun I had playing it online with fellow VGC members.

#27: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) - Mario's 3D moveset has been great from the get go but this entry pushed it close to perfection. What is amazing is that the game is perfectly playable without the advance moves available to you but once you do incorporate those moves it opens up so many possibilities and changes how you approach every challenge in the game.

#26: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) - The vania of Metroidvania. Mixing Metroid's sprawling map system, RPG elements and so bad it's good voice acting this game is a delight. Let's not forget the amazing soundtrack too.

#25: Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - Nintendo wanted to reinvigorate a forgetten mascot and they succeeded splendidly. Donkey Kong got himself a whole family and stepped into the platforming genre with its own distinct identity.

#24: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (PC) - Blizzard nailed the loot system for this game so well that you could spend hours doing runs to get the precious rune you want. I never grinded the very high end gear but that didn't stop me from making dozens of new characters (mostly Amazons) and playing it to death.

#23: Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - Retro managed the hard task of capturing the magic of the SNES games while still giving it their own spin. DKC:R is a very solid platformer and I'll forever love the challenging K levels in each world.

#22: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS) - Such a fun game, I thought the re-using of A Link to the Past's map would have bothered me but in the end it didn't matter at all. The power to flatten yourself unto walls has to be one of my favorite "items" in the Zelda series.

#21: Hollow Knight (Switch) - Haunting music, tough but rewarding combat, a huge amount of content, Hollow Knight is a game I keep coming back to again and again (one day I'll beat Nightmare King Grimm)

#20: Diablo III: Reaper of Sould (PC) - After a rough start that had me dropping the game a month after release, the expansion fixed a lot of what was wrong with the loot system and going forward from that point it kept getting better and better. To this day, I'll build a character or two when a new season comes around.

Teamfight Tactics

I play almost only this game currently. One match take about as long as my train to work. Strategy without stress. Perfect balance between skill and luck. Warcraft 3 introduced me to the now so called auto battler and after trying out several variants Teamfight Tactics have them all beat. Player vs player in 8 man matches or teamed up with a friend. Changes sets 2-3 times a year keeping it fresh. I play it at the same time as writing this. And I will play it at the same time as folding my clothes soon.

Games that can be played on ones mobile phone might bee seen as a disgrace to the world of gaming. But I recommend this still, and not only because I want more gamers to beat.

#2

Diablo

When I try new games in the action RPG genre they mostly fail to intreats me because they arn’t like Diablo 1. This game makes no excuses for players. You might find that choices earlier in the game, gold badly spent or abilities and point placed wrong can make it near unplayable in later stages. There is nowhere to farm really. The randomly generated levels is what you get so you should probably check everywhere and everything to give you a better chance of beating the later levels. The dark and moody atmosphere is second to none in creating the almost hopeless feeling of despair. Your actions will matter. Killed units stay dead. Probably the only 2D game that I actually feel afraid of when playing.

I think this game is the best at representing what type of games I like. So if you agree with several of my other favourites there might be a chance that you will like this as well. Even if you need to manually save often in order to not lose progress when you die, which you will do.
