PS5 Outsells Switch 2, PS5 Tops 80M - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for September 2025

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 1,156,571 units sold for September 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The PS5 has sold 80.25 million units lifetime.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 1,079,013 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 9.24 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 311,009 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 151.93 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 149,337 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 33.68 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the fourth month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 0.46 million units, as the Switch 1 sold 622,621 units worldwide in June 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by over 337,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 371,000 units. PS4 sold 1,494,037 units for the month of September 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 520,809 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 91,049 (-7.3%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 145,350 units (-49.3%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 519,006 units (-62.5%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by nearly 34,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by nearly 281,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 26,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are up by over 51,000.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 9.24 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 8.21 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 3.31 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.69 million units.

Switch 2 Remains Best-Seller as Sales Top 3M - Americas Hardware Estimates for September 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in the Americas (USA, Canada, & Latin America) with 357,107 units sold for September 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The Switch 2 has sold 3.21 million units lifetime.

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 225,618 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 31.81 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in third place with 87,793 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 20.50 million units. The Nintendo Switch was the fourth best-selling console with an estimated 66,846 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 57.24 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the fourth month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by nearly 108,000 units as the Switch 1 sold 249,278 units in the Americas in June 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by over 221,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 175,000 units. PS4 sold 446,729 units for the month of September 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 263,105 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 132,199 (-37.0%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 89,596 units (-50.5%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 154,469 units (-69.8%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by over 14,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 22,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by over 16,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by over 12,000 units.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 3.21 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 2.67 million units, the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.09 million units, and the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.99 million units.

PS5 Discount Boosts Sales, NS2 Tops 2M - Europe Hardware Estimates for September 2025

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in Europe with 488,054 units sold for September 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The PS5 has sold 27.56 million units lifetime. 

The PS5 was heavily discounted from September 17 to October 1, which caused a significant boost in sales.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 254,521 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 2.02 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 70,599 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 39.18 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 41,956 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 8.63 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the fourth month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by over 48,000 units as the Switch 1 sold 206,297 units in Europe in June 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by over 114,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 133,000 units. PS4 sold 602,153 units for the month of September 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 174,687 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are up by 7,542 (1.6%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 37,828 units (-47.4%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 105,208 units (-59.8%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Switch 2 sales are up by over 19,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 214,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by nearly 4,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by over 10,000.

2025 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 2.82 million units, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 2.02 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.75 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.41 million units.

Switch 2 Tops 2M, PS5 Tops 7M - Japan Hardware Estimates for September 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console in Japan with 219,923 units sold for September 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The Nintendo Switch 2 has now sold an estimated 2.17 million units lifetime.

The Nintendo Switch 1 sold an estimated 107,125 units to bring its lifetime sales to 36.11 million units. The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 106,117 units to bring its lifetime sales to 7.09 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 1,981 units to bring their lifetime sales to 0.69 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the fourth month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 0.08 million units as the Switch 1 sold 0.14 million units in Japan in June 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are up by nearly 16,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are up by nearly 1,300 units. PS4 sold 90,567 units for the month of September 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 710 units.

Nintendo Switch 1 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 201,499 units (-65.3%). PlayStation 5 sales are up by 52,873 (99.3%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 1,714 units (-46.4%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, Nintendo Switch 2 sales are down by over 35,000 units, Nintendo Switch 1 sales are up by over 31,000 units, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 74,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are up by over 600 units.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold an estimated 2.17 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 1.05 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold 0.62 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.03 million units.

This month should be interesting, as the first full month post the PS5 price hike, we'll see how big an impact it has on sales.
Another rather quiet month for Switch 2 with no really major releases, but its newness should keep it rolling til the big guns arrive from October.

PS5 sales should be down a bit more year-on-year in the US than we have seen so far this year, however, it was heavily discounted for most of September in Europe. The little bit of data we have so far is showing sales will be roughly flat year-on-year in Europe in September. Though could change once more data comes in. PS5 Digital Edition was discounted from €500/£430 to €400/£340 and disc drive version from €550/£480 to €500/£435.

2025 year-to-date, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 3.21 million units, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 2.67 million units, the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.09 million units, and the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 0.99 million units.
