Forums - Politics - Study: There is more diversity of beliefs on the political right than on the left (U.S.)

In this study by the British Journal of Social Psychology, US adults were polled on their attitudes towards a number of political issues, as well as their party affiliation.

The results showed that the views of those on the left were closely clustered, those on the right were more varied and included a wider range of beliefs and attitudes.

What wins elections in the US are swing voters, so it's pointless to point fingers. This country has been slowly torn down, little by little, by both of these parties. And until something else rises up that is free of lobbying, it's not going to change. It's going to continue to go downhill.

Cannot say this is a surprise. The right can get a bit culty in parts. But at this point it almost seems like a mantra of the left to not listen or talk to people with different views. It also seems the overton(?) window is shrinking to ever smaller sizes because of the left.

There were some funny comparison videos on youtube during the presidency campaigns, with people outing themselves as left on Trump-rallies and instantly being welcomed. Vs outing themselves as right on Kamala-rallies and instantly being shunned and harassed.

Well, if I have to guess I would say that's because the left usually involves more progressive beliefs that are associated with equality. This kind of things are often percieved as "the moral thing to do", to the point were we can often find conservative people with some "taints" of the left like feminism or being in favour of some welfare state policies.

To sumarize: it's easier to find a right-wing person with some leftist ideas than a left-wing person with some right-wing ideas.

Not surprising, the left actually believe in something, while the people on the right just want ‘daddy’ to rule.

You have to be flexible in your views, when you are leaving room to flip flop when Trump does.

Trump supporters include people who are pro-war and anti-war, but they are not different people, just the same people holding both views, changing between them based on what is more convenient to the leader at the given time.

Nah I think what it shows is the "I'm a fiscal conservative but socially liberal" types showing up.

Some people just want lower taxes but don't believe in a lot of the other shit that comes with right wing rhetoric. So you have rich people who are basically there just for the tax breaks they get, but they tend to be more socially liberal.

And on the flipside you probably have a lot of the so-called "people who vote against their own interests" group who are generally poor or living paycheque to paycheque but blame everything on immigrants, are angry at gays, but they themselves don't benefit from the "support the rich" economic policies of the right wing and even actively stand to suffer because of it (ie: cuts to Medicare and other social programs). So this cohort actually support economic policies that would be more aligned with the left so they essentially vote against their own interests. As Trump put it "I love the poorly educated!", lol.

Not surprising. From a historic perspective the political left is more keen to emphasize the group, where the political right emphasizes the individual.
Social responsibility versus individual responsibility within a society. This means that the left is more likely to fall into groupthink.

The youth are with the right, most of the left seem to white older women, or the rainbow people so its no surprise by these results. This also isnt the first major publication to post such statistics.

This is not really true, Trump still lost the 18-29 age group, as he did in 2020 and 2016 as well.

You can make inroads because people in this age range are frustrated by not having chances at things like being able to afford a home, get certain jobs, post COVID inflation, etc. etc. but that backlash will eventually hit whatever incumbent party, if in 2-3 years this same group has the same frustrations, then they will take it out on the Republicans.

Younger voters also tend to drive the most left candidates like Zohran Mamdani's shocking New York City mayoral win is driven heavily by younger voters who agree with his policies. It's older farts who are freaking out about that.

That’s because most things that leftwing people believe in are actual facts and basic truths, and there can’t be much deviation on that. Like if you believe in climate change then believe in climate change. If you believe in equality then you believe in equality for all, no exceptions but the biases and intolerances of the right are many and varied(some dislike foreigners but are ok with gays, some despise both, some just hate Jews, some are even relatively tolerant and just believe in traditional conservative values in relation to things like government size and tax). The right encompasses the traditional fiscal conservatives, the religious extreme, the religious moderates, the conspiracy theorists, poor rural people that believe electing billionaires will be good for them etc.
