Our first Asian country in this series. Despite a blooming popular culture which reaches way beyond the country’s border, and rather big video game market, South Korea has never been a super power in the video game development. The output looks like nothing compared to Japan. However in more recent years South Korea has become a more significant country in the industry, starting to get some really successful video games. Really they have always been quite big for MMO, but the more broader catalogue is a new thing.

Some notable South Korean developers and their games:

NeoWiz

NeoWiz of cause delivered the soulslike sensation Lies of P, which took the World by storm, before that they mainly made smaller projects, where they did get some success with the DJMax series.

DJMax Respect

DJMax Technika Tune

Lies of P

Nexon

Huge successful developer of MMOs and mobile games, they have recently started to branch out with their indie division mintrocket, creating the smash hit Dave the Diver. Of their MMO games, Dungeon & Fighter is one of the most financially successful games of all time, while Crazyracing KartRider is not far behind.a

Vindictus

Crazyracing KartRider

DNF Duel

The First Berserker: Khazan

Dave the Diver

Shift Up

Receiving some attention for the mobile game Goddess of Victory: Nikke, at least enough for Sony to see their potential, Shift Up went on to develop the massively critically acclaimed action adventure game Stellar Blade.

Neolith/Eolith

When the original SNK shut down, the King of Fighters series shortly got taken over by this South Korean studio, while there are more popular games in the series, both games Neolith developed received critical acclaim.

The King of Fighters 2001

The King of Fighters 2002

Phantagram

Developer of exclusives for the OG Xbox. Their tactical wargames Kingdom Under Fire games were very well as was the vehicular combat game Phantom Crash. Ninety-Nine Nights, which the studio co-developed with Q Entertainment received a lot of attention as an Xbox 360 exclusive, but ultimately received mixed reviews.

Phantom Crash

Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusader

Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes

Ninety-Nine Nights

Bluehole Studio, PUBG Studios

A very significant MMO developer. PUBG: Battlegrounds was the big battle royale game before Fortnite took over the World, and it still has plenty of players.

I had NO idea that Phantagram was a Korean developer!

Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders was freaking DOPE on the OG Xbox! Heroes was pretty good as well, but I much preferred Crusaders.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

My favorite game is easily Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders, it always made my top 50 list every time I did one for all games.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Stellar Blade.

Stylish, hard-hitting combat wrapped up in gorgeous visuals and a cool sci-fi setting.

Annyeonghaseyo! My top Korean game pick is Ragnarok Online, an early and memorable introduction to MMOs for me.

Interestingly, PUBG seems to have been overlooked so far.

You say tomato, I say tomato

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

I don't think I've really played anything Korean.
I did play demo of 1996 RTS game War Diary (Choongmoogong), but never got the game.
Other than that, maybe tried some 8/16-bit games on emulators. Dodgeball King on Master System comes to mind.

It do be Stellar Blade for me, but Lies of P was pretty good

Not much for me here, maybe Dave the Diver, though I'm expecting Crimson Desert, if it lives up to at least half the expectations, to be that game once it releases.

South Korea really stepped up the last few years huh?
