Forums - Nintendo - The "What Games/Platforms Could Come to NSO" Thread

Hey all. Switch 2 has opened new possibilities for NSO's libraries with a GameCube app and the superior specs and included internal storage of Switch 2.

What are some games and platforms that you think could or could not come to NSO and its Expansion Pack? I think any future platforms will be part of the Expansion Pack with base NSO still limited to NES, SNES, and GB/GBC.

Wii - all but guaranteed to come as a platform

Likely games: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Paper Mario, Monster Hunter Tri, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor

Master System - maybe

Game Gear - maybe

PC Engine - maybe

Commodore 64 - no way

DS - no way

3DS - no way

Wii U - no way

Saturn - no way

Dreamcast - no way

N64 games

Super Smash Bros. - Maybe

Donkey Kong 64 - Maybe

Conker - Maybe

Diddy Kong Racing - Maybe

GameCube games

Super Smash Bros. Melee & Mario Kart: Double Dash!! - Likely being saved as individual HD releases.

Animal Crossing - Unlikely, since the game's clock ends at the end of 2030 and will reset back to the start of 2030.

Mario Party 4-7: Likely. Switch 2 has a mic which should be able to emulate GameCube's mic in the case of 6-7.

Metroid Prime 2 - Likely getting saved for an individual paid release or the trilogy from Wii will get a paid release.

Sonic Adventure games - Likely. At the bare minimum I could see a new port for more modern platforms including Switch 2.

Star Fox games - Maybe. I could see Assault getting a remaster or remake.

Kirby Air Ride - Likely

Resident Evil 4 - Likely

Unannounced Mario Sports games (Baseball, Golf, Tennis) - Likely

PC Engine/CD would actually make me sign up for NSO, once there are enough titles from the platform that I care about on there. Not permanently, since I don't play online, but occasionally at least.

PC Engine

SEGA Saturn

SEGA Dreamcast

SEGA Master System

SEGA Game Gear.

Neo Geo

All of that is pretty easy to emulate these days. Saturn used to be difficult, but not anymore. Switch 1 is running Saturn emulators with the ports on it from City Connection. They are running on a Saturn emulator.

Yeah, Saturn would be great for me too since there's a lot of stuff there I'd like to play (and tons from Japan that I never got to).  Normally, Neo Geo would as well but I've already bought pretty much all I want via ACA on Switch.

Saturn would be cool. I put it in the "no way" category because of licensing, not issues emulating the experience.

I also don't see Dreamcast happening because of licensing and that it's more likely Switch 2 would get a Dreamcast collection for purchase.

That would be pretty funny that Nintendo would only bother licensing the Genesis/Mega Drive on NSO. Most would be forgiven in assuming that the Saturn and Dreamcast would eventually come to NSO.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I can see the Wii being added down the line to Switch 2 as the functionality needed to play Wii games I believe is already built-in to the joy cons/pro controller. I could be wrong on that.

The DS can technically be done by having both screens shown on top of each other on a single Switch 2 screen. That's how played DS games through the DeSmuME emulator, but I doubt Nintendo is interested in making that work.

As far as games I'm hoping will get added the most:

All Game Boy consoles - Gen 1-3 Pokémon games (HOW DO WE NOT HAVE THIS YET?!)
N64 - Super Smash Bros, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Turok 3 (just because Turok 1 and 2 are already there) Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Shadows of the Empire, and Episode I Racer
GameCube - Smash Bros Melee, Wave Race: Blue Storm, 1080: Avalanche, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2 and 3, Kirby Air Ride, Mario Kart: Double Dash, and the Mario Party games.

Saturn would be nice, it's the console I've played the least amount of games from of the major console manufacturers. (Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Xbox) It wouldn't surprise me if the Dreamcast is on there one day.
For the Gamecube of games not announced as coming I'd like to see Eternal Darkness, Skies of Arcadia, Viewtiful Joe, Star Fox Adventure, Wave Race.

Hopefully the Wii. Some Wii games of course would need pointer movement translated to joystick movement, and many would also need motion controls translated to standard controls so that people aren't force to play with motion.

I don't really see any other systems coming. I assume Nintendo has to pay for any non-Nintendo game added to it, which is why most of the games on there were made by Nintendo. Genesis is the one non-Nintendo retro system that was actually popular, so of any of the options that one made the most sense, and that's the one NSO has. Non-Nintendo games are rare on NSO because that cuts into the profit from NSO, and if they add more entire non-Nintendo systems beyond the Genesis that would cut a lot more into NSO's profit. I don't see that happening, unless the fees they'd have to pay for this stuff is super low. This isn't like the virtual console where every game had it's own price, every single non-Nintendo game (from Nintendo systems or not) on NSO cuts out NSO profits, and thus also makes it more likely they'll have to make a third higher tier, and quite frankly the other systems were never very popular so just aren't worth that for Nintendo nor NSO users. Makes a lot more sense for companies to just put out a compilation on Switch and Switch 2 (as has already been done a bunch on Switch) than this stuff get crammed onto NSO.

If Nintendo can finish up their NES, GB, SNES, Genesis, N64 collections on NSO over the next couple years, and build out the GC collection this gen as well as a Wii collection, that'd be a superb retro games service on NSO and I'd consider that complete. Anything more would not be worth it from either business-side (less profit), consumer-side (higher cost), or both.

Likely?? That doesnt make any sense at all lol

OT: I am hoping for mainline pokemon games and DS platform implementation alongside a dual screen add-on for Switch 2
