Edit: see master thread:
https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/249268/master-thread-favorite-games-from-different-countries/

This time I am going for Denmark, to have the country in between, and not to be so overwhelmed as I got with Sweden, haha. Denmark has a fairly impressive gaming industry for it’s size, but certainly nowhere near Sweden’s level. Just about enough to make a solid poll without leaving out a bunch of big titles. So once again, please vote and write your favorite Danish game, remind me of important omissions and correct any mistakes I may have made.

To repeat the rules:

The rule is that the main Developer should be from the country, publisher is irrelevant. Support teams do not count. If two teams from different countries have contributed equally or almost equally, they can count for both countries. Likewise if a developer is split between two nations, and there is no reason to believe it mainly made the game in the other country. In case of incomplete information, I sometimes may have to do a qualified guess on whether a game qualifies or not (let's hope that is not needed).

Some notable Danish developers and their games:

IO Interactive

Possibly the only AAA developer in Denmark, but one that has had been at the top for 25 years. They are of course mostly famous for their long running Hitman series, for which they have developed 8 titles. However, other titles have also gotten positive attention, such as the sixth gen cult classic Freedom Fighters and 2009’s Mini Ninjas. Well, yes, they also received some negative attention for their Kane & Lynch games, auch!

Also, while the James Bond film license is now under the umbrella of an American tech- and media oligarch,  it is nice to see that the video game license has landed in the hands of the provocative Danish developer.

Notable games:

Freedom Fighters

Hitman: Contracts

Hitman: Blood Money

Kane & Lynch

Mini Ninjas

Hitman (2016)

Hitman 2 (2018)

Hitman 3 (2021)

Playdead

They might only have two games on their resumé, but this indie darling have still managed to shape the industry. Limbo is one of those great titles people point at as a pioneering title for the boom in the early-2010 indie game market. The follow-up Inside, arguably received even more acclaim.

Notable games:

Limbo

Inside

Geometric Interactive

Jeppe Carlsen of Playdead decided to make a new studio, which developed what might be considered a spiritual successor to Limbo/Inside in the 2023 hit Cocoon. Excited to see what this studio does next.

Notable game:

Cocoon

Gears for Breakfast

They have only really had one big success so far, but A Hat in Time is certainly one of the more beloved indie 3D platformers, a celebration of the golden era!

Notable game:

A hat in Time

Triband

Certainly one of the most absurd developers, but with a sense of humor no doubt. Mostly known for What the Golf? But their other games take a similarly crazy approach.

Notable games:

What the Car?

What the Golf?

What the Bat?

NapNok Games

Made the one game that is often being pointed to as the one that used the Wii U game pad the best! Quite an accomplishment for this small Danish developer! To bad, the e-shop is closed making it impossible to experience the game if you don’t already have it. Thanks Nintendo!

Notable game:

Affordable Space Adventure

3D realms / Slipgate Ironworks

I cheat a little bit here but I just have to mention 3D realms, legendary developer of Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior, that was when it was an American studio. They relocated to Aalborg, Denmark and has not developed games since, build is instead working as publisher for other studios games,  such as Californian developer Voidpoint. But more importantly for this thread, they also publish the games of Slipgate Ironworks, which is likewise based in Aalborg. Their biggest hit yet was Ghostrunner, co-developed with polish developer One More Level (who took over the development of the sequel completely). Slipgate Ironworks has more recently made Tempest: Rising, which also got its fans.

Notable games:

Ghostrunner

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin

Tempest: Rising

Logic Artists

There is no thread without a tactical RPG developer. This is the biggest one in Denmark with the Expedition series. Yet one of their titles seems to stand above the rest.

Notable game:

Expeditions: Rome

Die Gute Fabrik

Despite the german name, this studio is Danish. They started out helping Sony ride the early 2010 indie-wave, releasing PlayStation minis, and later also made games for PlayStation move. However, being a more established studio now, they are making indie titles for multiple platforms.

Notable games:

Saltsea Chronicles

Mutazione

Other games to consider:

Deep Rock Galactic

Total Overdose

Chili Con Carnage

Trailmakers

Echo

This is a new release, but Tempest Rising! Game is everything I would’ve wanted from a modern Command & Conquer and more. Even the menus and loading screens are slick and deeply ingrained with the type of game C&C was. Awesome campaign, a great variety of enemy units, and a killer soundtrack featuring Frank Klepacki! Up there in GOTY of 2025 for me!

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Great list of games. I probably got the most enjoyment from A Hat In Time.

INSIDE and Affordable Space Adventures are so goddamn good and unique games.

LIMBO - but as an IP I have to give it to Hitman - I loved the original from 2000, and new ones are really fantastic.

Honorable mentions to Affordable Space Adventures, one of the best asymmetric co-ops (unfortunately for wider audience, only available, and probably possible out of the box, on WiiU) and Mini Ninjas (also from IO Interactive, like Hitman), game that has such a great art and overall vibe, along with very good gameplay, that I always wondered why it's not more popular.

Have to give it to LIMBO, as I loved playing it back in the day, and likewise with the recent INSIDE, kudos to Playdead.

Some good danes in that list, also had fun with Affordable Space Adventure and What the Golf, plus I still need to get around Cocoon!

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

I haven't really played Danish games either. Of those I have only played Deep Rock Galactic for 4.8 hours. It is the victor by default. Tempest Rising looks interesting though.

From those listed, Affordable Space Adventures for me.

One of the best examples of a Wii U exclusive leveraging the hardware to provide a unique experience. Such a shame that as a result it is now trapped on a dead console.

Looks like the only one I have is Total Overdose. Lots of fun, if has couple major design faults.

Ive only played Kane & Lynch, so I guess that. Did try A Hat In Time for a bit, but the camera kept zooming in very close to my character by itself, so I couldnt really play it much. Dont know why that happened...
