Forums - Sales - PS5 Ships 77.8 Million Units as of March 2025

Link to the VGChartz article here.

Sony Interactive Entertainment in its financial results announced it has shipped 77.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles as of March 31, 2025.

With 77.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles shipped that means 2.8 million units were shipped from January to March. This is down 1.7 million from the same quarter in 2024 when 4.5 million units were shipped.

For reference, the PlayStation 4 had shipped 2.5 million units in the same quarter for a lifetime total of 79.2 million units shipped as of March 31, 2018. This puts the PS5 behind shipped PS4 units by 1.4 million units.

There were a total of 76.1 million games sold on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the quarter. This is up 3.5 million from 72.6 million during the same period a year earlier. Digital sales accounted for 80 percent of software sales.

There were 5.9 million first-party games sold across the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. This is down 6.4 million from 12.3 million a year ago.

There were 124 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network, an increase of 6 million from 118 million a year ago.

Sony forecasts it will ship 15 million PlayStation 5 consoles for the current fiscal year that runs from April 2025 to March 2026. That would put lifetime shipment figures at 92.8 million units at the end of March 2026. To compare, the PlayStation 4 had shipped 97 million units by the same amount of time, which would put the PlayStation 5 4.2 million units shipped behind the PlayStation 4.

Sony's Game & Network Services Segment for the quarter ending March 31, 2025, reported revenue decreased 46.1 billion yen ($0.31 billion) year-over-year to 1,051.3 billion yen ($7.14 billion), while operating income decreased 13.3 billion yen ($0.09 billion) to 92.7 billion yen ($0.63 billion).

For the PS5 to reach the PS4's numbers, Sony would have to release great first-party games, but it seems that this is not a priority in Sony's incompetent management. They could release a collection with all the old God of War games.

Which shows how crazy it is that it's selling almost exactly at the same pace as the PS4, which by then was $299 with $199 Black Friday deals. At this rate, Sony can almost be like Valve with Steam, just occasionally release a first-party title and sell 100 m+ every generation.

The PS5 will have a very hard time reaching PS4's totals for FY5, even without a possible tariff price increase, but with GTA6 and the decline of Xbox hardware, the later years should be a cakewalk.

Sony has been releasing great first party games all generation lol. They just had the Game of the Year last year! From a critical and commercial POV, their first party this generation has never been stronger. Its just people are stingier on what they count this gen compared to previous. Games like Until Dawn, Ratchet 2016, SpiderMan 2018, SoTC, MediEvil, weren't technically developed by a first party studio at the time, but many still counted it in "list wars" back in the day, without much pushback. Nowadays we still have a few people who don't want to count Helldivers 2 lol.

All that aside, the only thing preventing the PS5 from surpassing the PS4 is Sony releasing the PS6 in 2027. And even then it could be a close call:

FY25: 15M
FY26: 13M
FY27: 10M

Total before PS6 launch: 116M+. And I'm lowballing 2026 as it has both GTA6 and Wolverine.

Even if PS5 didn't reach the PS4's numbers it wouldn't make it a failure. The PS5 is a much more ambitious and expensive product than the PS4. PS4 only looked good because MS botched the hardware of the Xbone.

FY’26 is gonna be very tough for PS5. With all the prices hikes and the entry of a new competitor, PlayStation will likely be squeezed down to 13-16mil. However, F’27 should be pretty strong, so long as (a.) Rockstar releases GTAVI during that fiscal year, (b.) the PC port of GTAVI isn’t for a while, and (c.) Microsoft doesn’t release a next gen system capable of far better graphics than PS5 too soon (as this would soak up consumers searching for the most premium gaming system…which is an admittedly small block of consumers, though not negligible). I currently see PS5 hitting 120mil (maybe 130mil) territory LTD…which is quite sad given how lackluster this system has been compared to all predecessor systems.

Mind you this is if Sony hits the forecast exactly. It is possible they are being conservative due to the uncertainty with the Trump tariffs and the possibility of entering a recession.
