Forums - Nintendo - To which direction should the next 3D Mario game go?

Which 3D Mario game do you like the most?

Super Mario Odyssey 10 27.78%

Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2 10 27.78%

Another 3D Mario game 16 44.44%

Total:36

In Wman’s thread earlier this year, which posed a similar question, I expressed my interest in a bigger, more expansive version of Bowser’s Fury.

That DLC was a revelation for me. Its only problem, really, was that it was too short. If Nintendo embraces and expands upon that template — the creative platforming of the 3D World/Land sub-series paired with the free camera of Odyssey embedded in a seamless open world with lots of little playgrounds — the results will be phenomenal.

I enjoyed Odyssey more than Galaxy, love running around bigger levels looking for secrets and the 2D segments were great.

Perhaps the next Mario can play with time next to perspective. The flow of time, faster, slower, stopped, backwards as well as going back in time like the sand sea part in Skyward Sword.

If going for open world I hope it will be like J&D Precursor Legacy, connected worlds with different biomes in a map as intricately connected as Dark Soul's vertical world.

But most importantly, full multiplayer. I want to play this together, not take turns.

I enjoy couch co-op so similar to Mario 3D World will get my attention more.

Stick with sandbox. As much as I love Wonder & Galaxy, there’s nothing quite like Odyssey, SM64, and SMSunshine.

The next one should be Galaxy 3.

It's been 15 years already since the last one, and on modern hardware it could look gorgeous and they could really go wild with gameplay ideas.

I mean it's not like Galaxy is an ongoing series, so saying it's been 15 years since the last one, as though that means another one is expected and is due, doesn't have any relevance.

I'd prefer to see something completely new or something that combines elements of previous games rather than a straight up sequel more of the same. Could be open world, or could be regular 3D style areas, or more linear like Galaxy. Or could be a 'Galactic Odyssey' that ties those two ideas together - something like planetoids around larger arenas with Cappy mechanics.

Anyway I doubt we'll see another odyssey or galaxy or world for the next game. Open world seems the most likely thing after they tested it out with Bowser's Fury.

If they are gonna do a straight up sequel (Galaxy 3, Odyssey 2, 3D World 2) I'd rather that be a second Mario game for the generation, and have the first game next gen be something totally new rather than rehashing an old game.

I would love to see a sequel to 3D World at some point, but not for the next game. 3D World was so good, it really did 2D style Mario gameplay/stages much better than any actual 2D Mario this century.

It's relevant twofold; both in terms of "we haven't seen this in quite a while so it'd be cool to revisit" and the fact that technology has moved on a long way in the interim so there's a lot that could be done with the concept that wasn't possible back in 2010 on the Wii.

A Galaxy game with the graphics the Switch 2 is able to provide would be amazing, ngl

I really liked what I played of Odyssey back in that Switch first year ... Nonetheless playing through 3D World + Bowser's Fury leaves me perplex as the route they need to follow next.

I do think we're getting an expanded take on what they did with Bowser's Fury but with it's own original concepts. Open world but with segments that will make the areas feel like you're actually playing a level based in the frame of 3D World more or less.

Funnily enough, I haven't played any of the Galaxy games so I basically have almost no attachment to their legacy.

Mario platformers are best in the parkour approach Nintendo takes with them, the experimental differences between them is the best thing about the series.
