Forums - Sales Discussion - Five reasons why I am not bothered by Nintendo's Switch 2 hardware and software pricing

I'd imagine that Prime 4 & ZA will be $60 with $10 upgrade packs. The only ones that are more than $10 are for games like Kirby & Mario Party, that basically include additional DLC. Nothing like that has been confirmed for Prime 4 & ZA. I do wonder how the voucher program will work with Prime 4 & ZA though. I still have two tickets. I imagine I can get the Switch 1 versions and would then have to still get the upgrade packs separately.

Anytime a future purchase requires this level of analysis, a red flag should go up. The most successful consoles of all time (and products in general) jump out at you from the moment they're unveiled and scream, "BUY ME YOU FOOL!" with no questions asked. The rest, well...

Sony got dragged for 70$ games and deservedly so.
Nintendo is doing 80$ games (and 90$ physical). If you are okay with or much worse trying to defend it, then you are just a Fanboy and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Good job, guys! Your riot was so loud! That was all I could see on Internet. With PS5 maintening its space by selling almost the same as PS4, the message was even more clear

They sure learned the leason by raising PSN plus and the hardware prices while keeping 70$ for big releases... until the next increase.

I bet Take 2 wont dare to mess with GTA VI release or else they will be doomed

We reap what we sow

I will simply have the same gaming budget that I always had.

With prices going up on individual items, I'll just be more pickey and choosy in what I buy.

In the end it will be around 1 game purchase less a year. No big deal.

I'm fine with the hardware price, wouldn't mind if they pushed it to $500 if it meant better hardware.

Nintendo moving towards a more premium range of hardware is a good thing and will result in a better software ecosystem over the next 4-5 years, I think this time around they will do an actual Pro type model too to give them a mid-gen boost. You're getting decent hardware for a fair price, I'd rather have this than be sold a repackaged GameCube with a new controller thrown in and then be asked to pay 2.5x the price of a GameCube.

The software pricing is a bit on the high side, I think they will eventually settle it in at about $10 cheaper, but physical buyers are going to kinda have to accept physical is dying and basically physical games as time goes on are going to be nothing but physical vouchers for downloads. If you want physical games, you can pay more for them because they are more expensive to produce ($10 cut for a retailer + shipping costs + packaging cost + actual cost of the cartridge itself).

Great job proving Rols point. Those are ported games with expansions or added content. Zelda upgrades are free with NSO expansion pass while the other games include new content. The vast majority of consumers (because they are ports) will need the upgrade pack. Now since we are being disengious, how about DK Banaza? What are your expectations for Metriod Prime 4 and Pokemon ZA? $80.00 on Switch 2?

No, Prime 4 and Pokemon ZA will both be $10 more than their Switch 1 releases I expect, that will be the pattern for any cross-gen titles. That 3/4 of the $80 titles are Switch 2 editions is no indication that this price point will be limited to these editions and not regular Switch 2 exclusives, especially when we only have 2 Switch 2 exclusives priced with one of them being $80.

If you want me to actually engage with your future posts try taking a less needlessly aggressive tone and accusations of being disingenuous.

You should take your own advice because clearly you are smart enough to see two exclusives have already had their price revealed. How about Kirby Airriders or Zelda Age of Imprisonment? What are your expectations for those Switch 2 exclusives? It's disengious to ignore those ports include extra content to explain their 80 prices.  Plenty of us expect the $80 pricing to be tied to the upper echelon of releases with DK proving Nintendo absolutely plans on having variable pricing. Now please explain, if those next two Switch 2 exclusives are priced like DK? Does that prove Nintendo is clearly going with variable pricing as they stated? Also is Switch 2 not getting 3rd party games that cost less? Do we expect Next CoD, Fifa, Madden, etc to be 70 on PS/MS and 80 on Switch 2?

I think Nintendo will eventually back off of $80 unless it's for really top end releases. They are giving it a try with Switch 2 early adopters as a hedge against tarrif losses IMO.

But if people end up buying at that price ... welp. That's the free market, price is determined by demand and supply.

$39.99-$49.99 for low end games

$59.99 for mid-tier games

$69.99 for higher high games

Seems to be the ticket, but physical is a problem because I don't think those cartridges (high speed) are as cheap to produce as people think.

Physical buyers just are going to have to accept they are going to pay more IMO, honestly just move on and accept digital already, physical is going to die and that's just that. Time moves on.

@Soundwave That's obviously what this is. The upper echelon or biggest budgets are likely going to get the $80 pricing. A 3D DK game getting a $70 price tag should tell us they are absolutely not giving that price to every release. Mario Kart, 3D Mario, and even 2D Mario are likely to get the $80 prices along with 3D Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Smash are probably guaranteed. Whether we think they are worth $80 is subjective along with Nintendo could justify this by the fact that third parties release $70 games with micro transactions.

I don't think we're going to see the likes of Mario Tennis at $80, but yep the bigger games like Animal Crossing, 3D Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros and if they ended up doing a Prime 5. Unless the $80 releases underperform, which I don't think they will, they'll release more than just a handful of them this generation.

Well for comparison, here in Canada:

Switch launched at CAD 399, BotW CAD 80 for physical edition
Switch 2 is set to launch at CAD 629 (+58%), physical games are not priced yet $80 USD is currently CAD 111 (+39%)

Canada inflation from 2017 to now is 25.7% (According to Bank of Canada)

So Nintendo prices are going up over double the inflation rate here for the console, 150% over for games.

And no discounted Nintendo games here, second hand only.

(Correction, MKW is $80 in USD)

The Canadian dollar has weakened substantially though.

$450 USD = $624.22 CAD

Is what it is. Again with the threat of tarrifs looming over Nintendo in their biggest market (the US) don't think they were willing to eat a chunk of the exchange rate for other markets this time.
