Forums - Nintendo - Can Nintendo turn Switch 2's pricing disaster around? And how?

An update on Adolf Tariff's so-called tariff exemption for electronics.

Don't know if Switch 2 was part of the exemption or not because I don't know if Switch 2 uses superconductors.

Unfortunately, consoles are not part of the "exemption." The reason I put that in quotes is because some of the tech is still being tariffed, but at the 20% tariff bracket instead of 145%.

So he's fucking us over, as usual.

And in 2012 :p

Hype, fomo, got to have it first. Plus now there is the added fear that prices will increase after release.

Yes, the only thing they have in common is that they were sold out before they were released in the US.

But the term “sold out” can mean different things if the amount of inventory is different.
Bloomberg estimates that the Switch 2's initial shipments will be between 6 and 8 million, a number that is said to be the largest in console history, so clearly different from the Wii U.

https://famiboards.com/threads/analysts-project-a-6-8-million-unit-launch-for-nintendo-switch-2.13476/

And we don't know if there was a massive boycott before the Wii U launch.

Switch 1 was criticized for being overpriced and so was Switch 2. And it sold out worldwide.

#Droptheprice
What was that 😟?

^ This is why you can't take posters that say so did WiiU seriously. Anything can sellout if there are only two available lol. You will notice the posters that say WiiU also are too cowardly to predict Switch 2 will sale like WiiU lol. They always try to hide behind, well it will sale less than Switch. Which is true about every other platform including PS2 ;).

Of course it won't sell less than WiiU. With the Switch Nintendo combined their mobile audience with their console audience. WiiU was still sitting next to 3DS.

Selling out before release doesn't mean anything, it's the same with every console released. XBox Series included.

Anyway the fear of price hikes is real now. Recent consoles have only gotten more expensive during their lifetime and now with tarif threats it could be any time. Better pre-order at $450 instead of risking having to pay $600 later...

So no, pre-orders selling out is zero indication of how a console will do lifetime.

I fell a sense of Dejavu when I see peoples comparing Switch 2 situation with Wii U.

I don't think you can group all Switch customers together. You will have those who are huge Nintendo fans and will get the system and games whatever the price. Then you have more laid back Nintendo fans who will buy when they think its a good time and value but are pretty sure to get one eventually. Then you get to the customers more difficult to convince, more casual gamers, perhaps lower disposable income or people who look for value in their purchases and these are the type of people that need more convincing. The wii u had a good launch but it went downhill from there rather than build up it's install base. Often one of the critical elements of a console launch is its seen to be a success so others feel safe in buying it. It's being launched at a time where world trade is in a strange place to say the least and the USA is the most important market to Nintendo. It feels to me what could have been a success story may well end up being a failure due to high tariffs and poor sales in the USA but hopefully I'm wrong.

I'm personally not interested in the Switch 2 to buy as only really do portable gaming on my phone but very interested to see how it all pans out as interested in the gaming industry. It feels like Nintendo are in a difficult situation. I'm curious why they are retailing the Switch 2 at such a low price in Japan, you wonder if they had done an analysis of the Japanese market and realised a higher price point would have failed there and been unacceptable. However they obviously feel other markets will accept this higher price point. There has been a huge drop in disposable income around the world and you wonder if this maybe a first for Nintendo releasing a console that is too good (ie. too expensive).

Well the cheaper model of the Switch 2 in Japan is region locked. The regular region free one is like 470 dollars.

That's just a commercial decision to stop people exporting the cheaper model to other countries in the world, there is no manufacturing cost difference. They realise people around the world would want the cheaper Japanese model so are preventing them buying it.
