Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

I'm... sad.

The presentation was great. The console itself is awesome and it offers a lot more than I expected (4K, 120fps...). All of the new Nintendo games look incredible. Tons of third party suport, including some amazing exclusives like NotBloodborne 2. There are lots of games at launch. Silksong is back, Deltarune is back.

I love the console and I love the games its gonna have. But... those prices. Like... I can KIND OF come to terms with the console's price. But this whole 80-90 euros for the games? I'm sorry, but that's just insane. There's no excuse for that.

I wanted to buy the Switch 2 at launch. But now that I know the prices... I don't even know if I'll purchase it. Period. Until now, I could purchase physical Switch games at launch for 40-50 euros at most. But if prices are not only increasing, but charging another extra for the fact of being physical, my pockets cannot keep up with this. And knowing that Nintendo does not have significant sales for their own games, unfortunately I have to skip this console.

Nintendo has always been my main platform. Not anymore.

I'm not sure if that's 100% known as this moment. I'm sure it would be since it's law. A user who lives in Germany in another thread is saying Switch 2 games will be 90 Euros. I'm trying to find more information. Would've been helpful if Nintendo put out a full press release statement going over pricing rather than randomly posting pricing on certain games without much context.

MK World being $80 is directly on Nintendo's website, but there's 3 asterisks next to the price saying "***Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Actual price may vary" which doesn't help.

I need that info to decide then. I assumed EU prices would be lower before VAT is applied.

@Zippy6 posted an image confirming from Nintendo's website the pricing. Looks like this would be after VAT is applied as this is pretty definitive. Translates to nearly $100 US to get MK World physically. That is crazy!

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Also, why are the borders on physical games so big?! I assume to differentiate itself from the first Switch, but I loved the simplicity of the Switch logo on the box art.

Uhhh. So they have room for the logo I guess, but they should just move the 2 and the joycons to the side of the "Nintendo Switch" text lol. Hopefully this is placeholder as it looks a little silly and I'd prefer more of the case to be taken up by the cover art.

Do we know for sure the digital prices of games in the US???

The EU/UK stores both list two different prices, one for physical and digital, but USA only has one price, $79.99 for Mario Kart and $69.99 for Donkey Kong.

Is it possible that in the US BOTH the physical and digital version of the game are $80? And there's no discount for digital in the US?

I assume it would be cheaper like the other regions but I haven't found anything to confirm this.

Mario Kart is a bigger launch game than a 3d Mario would be. A 3-year-old rerelease Mario Kart is the best-selling Switch game by a wide margin and continues to sell well 8 years later. It would be nice to have a 3d Mario as well, but Mario Kart is the better choice to get people buying the console at launch and it isn't even close, especially with the pak-in option.

I just can't shake the Pro console vibes, a very ecpensive one even before you consider the Express card. I'll have paid less for my PS5 and it's SSD expansion. Much like the PS5 pro, I can't justify it at all with that software line up and I am going to assume cross gen will last for quite a while with 129 million Switch users.

Not sure how you are getting "Pro" vibes. It's very clearly a solid generational leap. Basically looks like it's PS4 Pro power given that the games are graphically a huge leap over Switch and it can run them in 4k or 120fps. It's the complete opposite of Pro console vibes. Saying it has Pro console vibes is the absolute last thing I would have expected anyone to say lol.

At a glance its easy to see why someone would say this tbh. Generational leaps used to be undisputable and not measured in pixels counts or framerate... Going from Skyward Sword to Breadth of the Wild. Or Mario Galaxy to Mario Odyssey. It was on was on a complete different level  ... if someone showed you a screenshot of the new donkey kong it definitely looks cleaner than the average Switch game but visual ballpark is not far off. They've just gone real hard on scale whilst maintain a 1080p/60fps.

Not only that but from a 1st party perspective they only showed 2 games built for Switch 2, the rest were cross gen games with Switch quality assets. But as someone said this is the Series X/PS5 all over again. It's just a reflection of the current times and diminishing returns without breaking the bank

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (on Switch alone) has outsold Super Mario Odyssey + Super Mario Wonder + Super Mario 3D World/Bowser's Fury *combined*.

A lot of people are living like 20+ years in the past with how they view Nintendo.

All I see is a lot of bad buzz after the prices. It is completely overshadowing the Direct.

75% are only talking about the price

10% are talking about Mario Kart which looks good

10% are talking about the From Software exclusive

5% are talking about the rest of the game. 0 hype for DK, Kirby air Riders , the paid demo and the wheelchair game.

Yeah, not surprising. And not surprising why they didn't announce the pricing during the Direct, though that only save them for a few minutes as people starting finding the prices on the website.

It's a pretty classic Nintendo blunder...do amazing stuff but then totally mess up one or two things that there was just no reason in the world to mess up.

If the Direct finished by revealing DK as a holiday title and then 3D Mario as a launch title, and games at $60, even if it was $60 digital / $70 physical, then I think the HW pricing still would have been eye watering but given the power of the system it is at least understandable, and the hype for the system would be insane and everyone would have come out of the Direct blown away (I sure was blown away before the last game was revealed as DK instead of Mario).

But with those couple bad choices, now it's just like where the heck is Mario and why is it replaced with a critical/sales unknown such as 3D DK, and why does everything cost so much all of a sudden?! Then once people are in the wtf mood from no Mario and the prices, they you start thinking why the hell do that have a paid tech demo instead of coming with the system AND what the heck was that lame looking wheelchair basketball mouse-demo game when they could have put that effort into an actual good game or you know like getting Mario out on time after 7.5 years!

I think the whole vibe has changed around the launch from super excited to all sorts of questions and concerns from the moment the DK video started playing and the mood has really turned against it. Now it's just like yeah those are some serious mistakes that make the system questions, but graphics/performance and MK World and third party support looks awesome at least, if you're willing to pay the prices.

It's a little more complicated.

MK is a game that everyone can pick up and plays. It itsn't necessarily always the reason of buying the console. The selling power of BOW was more important at time to kickstart the Switch.

It did not save the Wii U. At the moment it's the only asset to sell a 500€ console. They will need to fire more shots soon.
