AMD or NVIDIA

It's that time again where I need to upgrade my PC, as it no longer boots up and I don't believe it is worth spending to fix it. Currently running a GTX1080 paired with a i7k with 32gigs of DDR4 Ram. I believe i have a power supply issue but since the PC is getting to that point where games are starting to require RT, i think its best i build a new PC.

I was looking at upgrading to a RTX5070 paired to with a i7 Intel CPU, however AMD just announced their 9000 range, and it seems that 9070XT is a better choice based on what they say so far.

I have heard NVIDIA is falling off the cliff with their GPUs, though very powerful, they are also very anti-consumer meanwhile AMD is earning better faith with the public, and their cards aren't always as powerful but are slightly more affordable.

If you were looking at buying a midrange GPU and CPU, which would you go with, the AMD 9070XT paired with an AMD 9800X3D CPU or the RTX 5070 with an i7k Intel CPU?

So, the age-old question, AMD or NVIDIA for a new PC build? Or should I wait?

UPDATED

I heard Nvidia removed the PhyX chip from the 5000 Series, making it run older games worse,  if that's confirmed, that's a horrific decision.

I am curious to learn more about AMD technologies. The benefits of pairing an AMD CPU with an AMD GPU, weather that makes a difference.

THREAD UPDATE

The conclusion was with all the research I have done, and the best option that matches my budget, I ended up going with AMD this time.

For those interested in my new Rig specs, please see the new thread I created.

9070XT is not yet out, wait a bit to see how it performs, it should have no problem beating 5070, but lets wait a bit.
What is certain is that 5070 it has 12GB of RAM and that there are already games where it chokes.

No game really requires RT. It's still mostly a nice-to-have, though many games get much more benefit from it than others now.

You'd be better asking this question in about ~36 hours once the 9070 cards actually appear in the real world and we get to see actual prices. But from current speculation the 9070XT is roughly the same performance as the 5070Ti and could be only two thirds of the price. It only really falls behind in RT performance but they've supposedly closed the gap this generation. The 9070 could actually be a fair bit better than the 5070 and even though they have the same MSRP will probably still be cheaper on the shelves.

So if you're looking for the immediate future AMD hands down, probably. We'll see. Just remember that AMD always runs more hot, so if you were aiming at a 750W build you should probably go up to 850W (for the 9070XT).

Right now Nvidia are on drugs or something.

Edit: If the prices and stock are still this bad after all the cards have launched, just wait 6 months.

Actually, there are games that are starting to require RT capable GPUs, or they won't even start (i.e. Indiana Jones and The Great Circle).

I did not know that. I remember seeing people complain they couldn't run the game on their PC, I didn't think it was actually that literal.

Requiring a modern RT capable GPU is one thing, do they not even give you the option to disable it??

I would highly suggest going for a AMD RX 9070 XT (over say a 5070 or 5070ti).
(12gb is not enough today, and their prices are insane, none are sold at MSRP for Nvida. Like you might pay half the price for same performance for a AMD card)

For CPU? honestly it doesn't matter as much.
This is where I would try to save some money if your worried about costs.
Just make sure you have 8 cores. You don't need to have the best of the best here (ei. a 9800x3D) (that more if you plan to feed a 5090).**

Sucks that the market is as it is atm (gpus) but nvidia seems way to greedy and lying about MSRPs.
They also have connectors that melt, cards that catch on fire, drivers that brick cards, driver issues that give black screen issues.... cards that are sold missing ROPs for some reason....   ontop of paying premium for it.

People need to give AMD a chance here, consumers shouldn't be blind sheep supporting a company that does so much crap.

If they make it overly demanding.... f*** em.
Just don't buy their games (so far its only like 1-2 games).

Developers should cater to the markets, esp on PC.

Yeah, game is built with RT in mind, no way to disable it, so minimum requirements are RTX 2060/RX 6600/A580.

There will be more and more games going forward that won't be able to run without RT GPUs - I guess, similar to how back in late 90s all of the sudden you had games that required graphic cards with Texture&Lighting hardware.

Well, oldest RTX 20x0 is almost 7 years old, it was bound to happen sooner or later - personally, I didn't see anything that screams "needs RTX" in my playthrough, but it's just how the game was made.

AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU for best quality and combo imo

AMD GPU is good for people with a lower budget, not sure if its worth going into the latest Nvidia GPUs just yet..

I wouldnt touch intel at this moment though....

I went from a RX 580 (AMD) to a RTX 4070 SUPER (Nvidia)
