Correct. I figured Skylanders and Disney Infinity were there but had no idea Rodea even existed.

Heck, when you consider how much Wii sold it's kind of sad that even GameCube didn't have a way worse post-replacement lineup. Twilight Princess was only day and date with Wii in Japan, coming out after the Wii version in all other regions. Madden NFL 08 didn't get particularly glowing reviews on GameCube but got some critical acclaim on Xbox 360 and PS3.

I think the reason GBA had a strong lineup is because it took until about 2006 for Nintendo to publicly acknowledge DS as the official successor to GBA. DS was risky since Game Boy Advance wasn't even 4 years old when DS launched, and it was one of the fastest-selling platforms ever. But DS made a big impact with its software and the rest is history.

I saw one of your earlier posts highlighting Xbox 360 and yes Xbox 360 had a strong lineup even after it was replaced. Xbox was nervous about Xbox One even after some course correcting and it wouldn't make sense to have 360 software dry up to nothing as early as late 2013 to early 2014. 

After doing a little more digging, Wii also got FIFA in 2013 and 2014, and it's last game was actually in 2020; a cool little retro-style GTA spoof called Shakedown Hawaii that I am actually considering getting now, cos it looks kinda fun plus the novelty of it being the final Wii game.

It did fall off quite steeply, even before it was replaced really, but I'd still say its post-launch support was better than Gamecube, or N64/Wii U.

Nintendo platforms tend to be retired in fairly short order; I expect Switch will probably be the new post-replacement champ for them, as while I don't expect its crossgen period to be nearly as extensive as PS4/XBO due to its harsher power limitations, its massive install base means it will likely still be getting lots of smaller games for years after the successor hits.

If people are happy with their old systems its absolutley ok but then they will not be able to play the latest games, as easy as that! There is a reason GTAVI is current gen only! If we take everyone with us then why not release GTAVI on PS3 and Xbox 360? Or even PS2/ GCN and Xbox? Answer: Because tech moves on! Its so redicolous that the Xbox SX(/SS!!!) is getting GTAVI despite its tiny HW base of 33 million (=N64!!), but Rockstar refuses to release GTAV on the Switch (150 million+). I do not say anything when crapware like FIFA wich is basically the same game every year released on the Mega Drive if they want, but games like Horizon, Halo, Gears, GT7... have to be current gen only!

If you buy a new car, are you willing to sacrifice power only because they use the same engine like in a 10 years old model?

The Super Famicom got a fair bit of Japanese support long after the N64 came out. Fire Emblem Thracia 776 came out for Nintendo Power, the SFC's downloadable flashcart service, in 1999, which was only two years before the Gamecube launched. The following year it got a full retail release. The Nintendo Power system continued to be offered for the SFC until 2007, which was after the Wii released.

Well yeah if they want to play next gen exclusives then they'll need to upgrade. It's just how it is every gen, but the key difference this time is prices are much higher than what console gamers are used to, and the economy is weaker.

I wish I knew why Rockstar refuses to port GTA5 to Switch, it's one of these questions that don't seem to have a good answer, like Vanillaware's refusal to put their games on PC lol. But putting this aside, it's not at all ridiculous that Xbox continues to get a strong 3rd party support. Scaling your game to work on Xbox consoles is very cheap and easy, and the target isn't Xbox consoles alone, but every system close enough to their specs. Switch is too underpowered and will require extra development time and costs for most AA/AAA games to work on it. It's just not deemed cost-effective by many publishers to port every game on it. Series S and comparable PC's (and potentially Switch 2 as well) are above the minimum specs required to run most AA/AAA games (so far) acceptably. 

Whatever the reason, this gen's games including exclusives are running just fine on a SteamDeck which is more or less a portable PS4. One of the few exceptions is Monster Hunter Wilds (which isn't even a great looking game so I don't know wtf is going on). I no longer think the problem is old console holding back the current generation, it's more an issue of developers failing to make use of current gen hardware to create things that are difficult to downscale to systems as old and weak as a PS4.

Graphics are getting better as devs learning to use the hardware. That would have been an argument for earlier consoles, f.e. the PS3 but today's systems share the same architechture. Its not new tech you need to "learn to use".

I said "tend to", not "always". Some Nintendo systems had decent support post-replacement, but most of the time they move on relatively quickly, even on the handheld side the DS for instance didn't have much longevity after the 3DS came out.

As SanAndreasX points out, SNES actually had some life left in it post-N64, getting games like Donkey Kong Country 3, Kirby's Dreamland 3, and Harvest Moon, plus in Japan support all the way to the year 2000.



PS2 of course, because they have games like God of War 2, Persona 3 Fes, Persona 4, etc.

NDs and 3ds also have some Pokemon games too like White/Black 2 for NDS and Pokemon Ultra SUN/Moon for 3DS, but I have to mention the PS3 too, because they have games like Yakuza 0, Metal Gear Solid V and Persona 5.

This feels like cheating a bit due to the weird circumstances, but the Atari 2600 got some good stuff after the release of the failed 5200, such as Dig Dug, Solaris, Pole Position, Jr Pac Man, Crossbow, and Mario Bros.
