The Switch is only slightly down YoY this week so the impact so far is just slight. Looks like it'll hold well for the next several weeks. And at least the PS5 is not falling below 10k yet.

Are you implying that the Switch is not a handheld console or is less handheld compared to those things? Cause it by definition is a handheld device so that wouldn't be accurate. The person you responded to literally wants the Switch to beat the PS2 so there's no inherent hidden motive with calling it a handheld. Calling it a hybrid or a home console is fine to be clear but I just don't get implying that sort of thing.

I never said that Switch would beat the PS2, let alone me wanting it to beat the PS2! I only said, that if sales continue like that, it will get more likley over time. I just said i do not exclude this possibility anymore! And only because the Switch is a handheld does not mean i cannot compare it to the PS2! Both are gaming systems, one is mobile the oder one stationary. Both play physical games, so yes they can be compared! If the Switch sells more than the PS2, then yes, the Switch will be Nr.1, if it fails to do so, then it lost this battle and will be Nr.2! As easy as that! Both systems can be compared directly. But what i am starting to think is, that Switch somehow starts getting dangerously close to PS2 LTD software sales (1,55 billion)...

I apologies to you and all above comments. I have miss-read the post and the intention. But still Switch for me is Hybrid, maybe because I never use it undocked.

Switch!!!

@Norion Of course i would not get depresive if the Switch did beat the PS2 but i am not storming every threat and spit around how it would pass the PS2 when all is said and done. All i said was that its not wise anymore to exclude this possibility. I would not bet my dig on the PS2 staying Nr.1🥶 But next year my opinion could change, maybe even earlier depending on this FY and its FC. Software is starting to get close!
@fedfed
Why apologize? You did nothing wrong my friend!😎

The funniest thing is that some people think Japanese would chose Playstation over Switch easily as soon as Sony release a handheld, when Nintendo handhelds always outsold Sony handhelds in Japan and elsewhere. I don't think many Japanese would buy the handheld that plays God of War over the handheld that plays Pokemon. Sony franchises are only catered to western audiences, they don't make Japanese style games like Nintendo.

Pretty much, Vita even sold less than the PS4. Switch isn't smashing it in Japan just because it's portable, but because it has games like Animal Crossing, Splatoon, etc, which Sony has no answer to.

If Switch was not portable i'd give it 30- 50 million max, maybe it would have even bound Nintendos Slipknot. The portable aspect is its main sales driver. More people use it in handheld mode according to Nintendo themselfes (ir.nintendo.com check up in the FY reports presentation papers), japan is a handheld loving country to this day and Switch obviously sold closer to handheld levels than to home console levels, heck maybe its even becoming the Nr.1 selling system of all time even ww. Withhout the Handheld itself wich the Switch is you cannot play anyway, the dock alone is nothing more than an HDMI adapter. Without the dock- wich is a hidden HDMI port, nothing more- you could play as a  HANDHELD. Why people keep insisting that Switch is more a homeconsole than a handheld? Every tablet/ smartphone would be a "homeconsole" because i can also play games witch them and hook them up to a TV. Also Vita and PSP can be hooked up to a TV. Are they "home consoles"? I don't think so...

What are you on about? You're taking issue with a whole bunch of stuff I never said.

I think I'm having a déjà vu right now

02./00. [NSW] Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (Square Enix) {2024.11.14} (¥6.980) - 930.505 / NEW
15./00. [PS5] Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (Square Enix) {2024.11.14} (¥6.980) - 230.581 / NEW
Released November 14, 2024

09./00. [PS5] Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Square Enix) {2024.02.29} (¥8.980) - 358.353 / NEW
Released February 29, 2024

In one month and a half, DQIII HD-2D sold 3 and a quarter times more... than 10 months of FFVII Rebirth.

I know DQ was always the favorite franchise in Japan, but... years ago, a FF main series game (excluding Online ones) selling less than 2 million units in Japan, would be considered "a failure". Maybe Rebirth had some digital sells and the real number is around 500K or even more, IDK, but the ratio compared with a low-cost production game, like DQIII is, ... is just criminal for FF series. I doubt SE will continue to do triple A games after the FFVII trilogy.

What the hell is happening with PS5 this january in Japan?
Is there some announced cut in price?

What do you mean? PS5 baseline is 10k now ever since the price increase, it sold 12k this week, so it's in line with its weekly baseline. Not sure where the confusion comes from to ask "what the hell is happening" when it is right in line with baseline sales.

Ringfit up 23% this week, it just keeps on selling. I always wondered why Nintendo did not release paid DLC (and add to NSO expansion pack) for this title. Seemed easy money to me.

Yeah I really thought Nintendo would do one or two more Ring Fit games (rather than DLC). RFA sold so well as a slow burn with just consistently good sales for years, and with people having paid extra for the Ring peripheral it just seemed common sense to take advantage of that user base by releasing a couple more games for it at like $40. Seems like such a waste to have a really popular exercise peripheral and then just abandon it after one game. Definitely one of the ways Nintendo could have stepped up this gen and done more.

10k is the baseline? And Sony is not doing a price reduction? Well... then I suppose Sony just gived up.
