Forums - Gaming Discussion - Better Island Console in '25: N64 or PS1?

Back in the day, I owned both. And while the N64's very best was arguably better than PS1's very best, I think it's fair to say that the PS1 spanked Nintendo's 64-bit darling. It was edgier, cooler, played CDs, had far better sound, full-motion video, a ridiculously-wider selection of titles to choose from. It was the "it" console of the mid-to-late nineties, and anyone over the age of twelve who didn't own one was an outcast.

But that was then.

Now, when I go back to play these machines, it feels like the PS1 is the more archaic of the two. Mind-numbingly slow load times, jaggies up the butt (the walls are moving, ma! the walls are moving!). Most of the iconic titles feel like rough drafts of things to come instead of fully-realized games. Then there's the whole trying to maintain a disc drive thing. It just hasn't aged all that well.

Which got me to thinking.

If I had to pick one console now, which would it be? And surprisingly, I think I'd pick the N64. Yes, we're talking maybe twenty games vs fifty. Yes, they're mostly Nintendo and Rare titles, which means they are going to feel a bit samey. But damnit... the experience somehow feels more modern and fully realized to me. For instance, when I play Diddy Kong Racing, I don't feel like I'm playing a rough draft of Mario Kart 8. I feel like I'm playing modern game with older graphics. The controls are spot on, there's no load times, the design is all there. It's truly astounding how complete those games where.

Anyway, I'd like to know what you guys think. If you could only take one console to an island in 2025 for one year, which console would you choose and why? I'm interested in seeing what the community has to say about this.

N64 for sure. Aside from everything you said, it also has the 4-controls-multiplayer factor in its favor

N64 because it's library had a more meaningful impact, and it has 4 controller ports unlike the PS1. Baffles me that PS2 didn't have 4 controller ports either.

Saturn for me but of the choices posted by OP. Easily PS1. However Saturn is my fave console of the era and brings me comfort so that would be my first choice. I truly think Saturn is the second best console that generation. Yes N64 had some groundbreaking games but it's just so few. Saturn Japanese library is so amazing and varied. PS1 you will never run out of stuff to play if you had every game for it. If you need 4-6 players you can always use the multitap for PS1 or Saturn and Saturn may not have MK but it does have Saturn Bomberman the best game in the series with up to 10 players.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

N64 because of faster load times and if I have 1-3 other people with me, I prefer the multiplayer titles.
PS1 has more titles and variety overall, but worse load times and the memory card requirement.

Also, if you have a PS2 or PS3 you can play almost every PS1 game. For obvious reasons, N64 backwards compatibility was never supported on any platform.

I had both as a kid and both were incredible but it would be the N64 for me.

N64. PS1 is one of the greatest consoles but N64 was better then and it is definitely better now.

PS1 any day.

I'll choose the vast library of amazing PS1 games over the handful of N64 games.

One had The Ocarina of Time, the other didn't.

the only n64 game I would replay (today) is Mario64...

meanwhile theres alot of great PS1 games, that you can still replay.

Chrono Trigger/cross, Final Fantasy 4-9, FFTactics, Front Mission games, Persona 1, and 2 (Innocent sin and Eternal punishment (if you have the translation)). Lunar I &II, Wild Arms I&II,  Xenogears, Tales of Destiny I&II, Suikoden I&II, SaGA games, StarOcean, on and on and on.... so many good games.
Old school Resident Evil? I think that alone matches upto Mario64.

I think PS1 takes the crown tbh.
